This document discusses the need for the ROS-I community to adopt and support the Kinect 2 depth sensor. It notes the Kinect 2's performance and price advantages for 3D vision applications. Challenges of using the Kinect 2 in industrial environments are also outlined, such as field of view, range, and requiring an industrial grade IP rating. Options for obtaining access to the Kinect 2 technology are explored, such as partnering with Microsoft or other time-of-flight camera manufacturers.
