Changing Your Hair Colour
We all know the power of a good hair day. So it’s no surprise to hear the state of your mane and
state of mind are inextricably linked. So much so that many hairstylists see themselves as
quasi-psychologists.
“Hair is a huge part of a woman’s personality,” says stylist Michael Brennan. “It can tell me so
much about where a client is at. And a new style can not only change someone’s look, but also
their outlook on life. “For Brennan, the best cuts come when there is an established relationship
between him and his client.
“You get to know clients so well,” says Brennan. “It’s a really intimate relationship. You’re
working in their personal space and crossing boundaries in a way that you wouldn’t even do
with a psychologist. Clients usually feel comfortable enough to talk about any issues they’re
having.”

3. “Blondes are at least seen as having more fun,” says Mersmann. “I think consumers totally buy into this
image. But I’d say half of my clients go back to their natural roots, so perhaps they didn’t have as much
fun as they thought they would”.
Mersmann notes that a large number of newly blonde clients have just come out of a relationship.
Blonde is certainly not a colour associated with settling down. Anita Loos wrote Gentlemen prefer
blondes, but the sequel was But gentlemen Marry Brunettes.
Above: Racheal McAdams and Victoria Beckham have both given blonde hair a go, but have both return to their
natural colours in recent months.

4. “From observations, women who dye there hair red are outgoing,” says Mersmann. Bray agrees:
“Natural red hair is quite rare in the gene pool, so you could theorise that somebody who wants to go red
wants to stand out.” Redheads have been associated with many traits throughout history – from a fiery-
temper to femme fatale.
Above: Ashlee Simpson and Rumer Williis have experimented with many hair colours, until they both decided on
red as there preferred opinion.
