3D printing will have a disruptive impact on future supply chains. By 2050, personalized consumption using 3D printing technology will allow individuals to develop and manufacture their own products. Major companies have already invested heavily in 3D printing. In 2015, one company invested in over 100 3D printers for a distribution center for same-day plastic printing and delivery. Another invested in over 900 3D printers for worldwide service organizations. Joint projects between logistics companies and 3D printer manufacturers will allow clients to receive 3D printed items via next-day delivery. Significant investments have also been made in developing new 3D printing technologies for metals and other materials.
