The resurrection of Jesus Christ - ( Matthew28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20, 1
Corinthians15)
SuddenlyJesus met them. “Greetings,” hesaid. They came to him, claspedhis feet and worshipedhim.
10
Then Jesus saidto them, “Donot be afraid.Goandtell my brothers to go to Galilee;there they will
see me.”(Matthew28:9-10).
After Jesus was crucified (nailed to a cross made of wood), he died and was buried in a tomb.
On the third day, he was resurrected, meaning that God had restored Jesus to life.
“After the Sabbath,at dawnon the firstday of the week, Mary Magdaleneand the other Mary went
to look at the tomb. 2
There was a violentearthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from
heaven and, goingto the tomb, rolledback the stone andsat on it. 3
His appearancewas likelightning,
and hisclothes were white as snow. 4
The guardswere so afraidofhim that they shookand became
like dead men.
5
The angel saidto the women, “Do not be afraid, forI knowthat you are lookingfor Jesus, who was
crucified.6
He isnot here; he has risen, just as he said.Come andsee the place where he lay. 7
Then go
quicklyand tell his disciples:‘He hasrisen from the dead and isgoingahead ofyou into Galilee. There
you will see him.’Now I have told you.”
8
So the women hurriedaway from the tomb, afraidyet filledwithjoy, and ranto tell his disciples.
9
SuddenlyJesusmet them. “Greetings,” hesaid. They came to him, claspedhisfeet and worshiped
him.10
Then Jesus saidto them, “Do not be afraid.Goand tell my brothers to go to Galilee;there they
will see me.”
11
Whilethe womenwere on their way, some ofthe guardswent into the city and reported to the chief
priests everythingthat had happened. 12
Whenthe chief priestshad met with the elders and deviseda
plan, they gave the soldiersa large sum of money, 13
tellingthem,“Youare to say,‘His disciplescame
duringthe night andstole himaway whilewe were asleep.’ 14
Ifthis report gets to the governor, we
will satisfyhimand keep you out of trouble.” 15
Sothe soldierstook the moneyand didas they were
instructed. And this story hasbeen widely circulatedamongthe Jews to thisvery day.
16
Then the eleven discipleswent to Galilee,to the mountainwhere Jesus hadtold them to go. 17
When
they saw him,they worshipedhim;but some doubted. 18
Then Jesuscame to them andsaid, “All
authorityin heaven andon earth has been given to me. 19
Therefore go andmake disciplesofall
nations, baptizingthemin the name ofthe Father andof the Son andof the HolySpirit, 20
and teaching
them to obey everything I have commandedyou. And surely I am with youalways,to the very end of
the age.”(Matthew28).
In 1 Corinthians, the 15th chapterof thisbookexplainsthe significance of the resurrectionof Jesus. It
saysthat Jesusdiedforour sins as we can read in 1 Corinthians15:3, “Forwhat I received I passedon to
you as offirst importance[a]
:that Christdied for our sinsaccordingto the Scriptures”.It alsosays that
our faithwouldbe meaninglessif therehadbeennoresurrection aswe canlearnfrom 1 Corinthians
2. 15:17, “And ifChristhas not been raised, yourfaith isfutile;you are still inyour sins”. It alsoproclaims
that Jesuswasresurrected aswe can learnfrom 1 Corinthians15:20, “But Christhasindeed been raised
from the dead, the firstfruitsofthose who have fallenasleep”.
