BC Tech's 2019-2020 annual report summarizes a year of growth for BC's tech sector and BC Tech's programs. Key events included the successful launch of new programs HyperScale and HyperTalent to support company scaling and workforce development. Five companies partnered with expert mentors through HyperGrowth to accelerate growth. 184 small businesses adopted new technologies through HyperTech to improve operations. BC Tech shifted events online due to COVID-19 and saw the tech community commit to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Looking ahead, BC Tech will expand its efforts to power BC's economic recovery across sectors through technology.
BC Tech’s policy recommendations includes a number of priority recommendations for the Provincial government to consider to help tech companies scale-up.
On March 22, 2017, the Government of Canada released its “Innovation Budget”, in which it proposed, “To invest up to $950 million over five years, starting in 2017–18, to be provided on a competitive basis in support of a small number of business-led innovation ‘superclusters’ that have the greatest potential to accelerate economic growth.”
It is in this context that leaders of industry, industry associations, research, and post-secondary education from across British Columbia have come together to discuss BC’s global positioning, competitive strengths, and cluster capabilities.
The objective of this document is to describe the existing set of strengths and capabilities in BC that are foundational to the growth of a digital technology supercluster in the province.
This document is intended to serve as a key input to the national discussion on creating world-leading clusters and partnerships in Canada.
It is a precursor to any formal letter of intent or proposal to the national supercluster competition announced by Canada in the March 2017 budget.

Since 2012, BC Tech has teamed up with KPMG to assess the impact of the technology sector in BC, and with this 4th report card, BC’s tech economy takes its place as a clear Canadian leader. In 2018’s report card, the BC technology sector’s economic performance received an A compared to other BC industries, and—for the first time—an A compared to other Canadian provinces.
Together with our partners at KPMG, we have released the latest installment of our BC Technology Report Card for 2020, a comprehensive analysis that compares the BC tech sector against other sectors in the province and against tech sectors in other jurisdictions.
TechTalentBC is a suite of innovative BCTIA programs and services designed to address the talent gap in BC’s tech industry and support the growth and development of tech companies in our province.

Igniting growth through innovation: disruptive trendsEY
At the Igniting growth through innovation retreat, EY invited a panel of thought leaders to discuss three disruptive megatrends that are driving today’s innovation and altering corporate strategy.
Report: Chambers New Norm - Adapting to Business NeedsDubaiChamber
The research summarised in this report sits as part of the 2021 Strategy Road Map laid out by the International Chamber of Commerce's World Chambers Federation (ICC WCF).
The Road Map highlights a number of key priorities for the WCF. These include greater alignment with the ICC, strengthening the brand of the WCF and chambers of commerce globally, and promoting better networking, knowledge sharing and innovation between chambers.
To address these priorities, the WCF outlined four initiatives on alignment, chamber’s brands, “Chamber 4.0”, and Chamber Connect. This report sits within the last of those, Chamber Connect, focused on improving global chambers collaboration and networking by creating and improving existing digital and physical platforms. This fourth initiative is being led by Cámara de Comercio de Bogotá and many of the insights in
this report build on those published earlier this year. To compliment those findings this report will
be shared across the chamber network to understand the actions chambers are currently taking in relation to COVID-19, share best practices and better serve the ecosystem, which can be used to highlight potential opportunities for greater collaboration. The report will further serve to support the development of content for the 12th World Chambers
Congress, due to be hosted in Dubai during November 2021.
Transportation organizations must reinvent their rail and transit companies to capture these 4 opportunities that will characterize the post-digital future. Read more.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

2019-2020 was a year of growth and
change for BC Tech. Capitalizing on
the successful launch of HyperScale
and HyperTalent, program companies
scaled up and opened new markets
for their exports. HyperTalent
launched to great success, with over
110 teachers learning about technolo-
gy trends and career opportunities,
and visiting leading tech workplaces to
learn directly from young profession-
als about what a career in tech looks
like. Five HyperGrowth companies partnered with 24 expert mentors to
supercharge their growth. At the same time, HyperTech powered 184
small businesses across BC’s economy to adopt technology and improve
their businesses, especially in response to physical distancing require-
ments imposed by the arrival of COVID-19.
It should come as no surprise that, like every other organization, BC
Tech was significantly affected by COVID-19. After a very successful run
of in-person events, like the solution-focused #WhatWorks Women in
Tech series, bringing the tech community together at our Hub
became temporarily impossible. But we successfully shifted our
events into a digital-first format, announcing our 2020 Technology
Impact Awards finalists live online to an audience of hundreds, and
hosting Virtual Connection Days to link dozens of small businesses to
tech experts one-on-one to adopt new technology to help them adapt
to the pandemic’s new realities.
Equally inspiring was seeing BC’s tech community respond to new
social movements to commit to leading on diversity, inclusion, and
equity for all underrepresented and marginalized people. I would like
to thank not just company leaders but workers too, for driving
grassroots change.
Looking forward, BC Tech is committed to expanding its efforts not
just for the tech sector, but for the provincial economy as a whole.
Technology is more than ever an accelerator for every industry. As we
recover together, BC’s tech companies can support—and lead—the
way to a more prosperous, sustainable, and innovative tomorrow.
BC Tech’s 27th year brought opportunities to grow our offering to
power BC’s economic recovery across sectors.
