2019-2020 was a year of growth and
change for BC Tech. Capitalizing on
the successful launch of HyperScale
and HyperTalent, program companies
scaled up and opened new markets
for their exports. HyperTalent
launched to great success, with over
110 teachers learning about technolo-
gy trends and career opportunities,
and visiting leading tech workplaces to
learn directly from young profession-
als about what a career in tech looks
like. Five HyperGrowth companies partnered with 24 expert mentors to
supercharge their growth. At the same time, HyperTech powered 184
small businesses across BC’s economy to adopt technology and improve
their businesses, especially in response to physical distancing require-
ments imposed by the arrival of COVID-19.
It should come as no surprise that, like every other organization, BC
Tech was significantly affected by COVID-19. After a very successful run
of in-person events, like the solution-focused #WhatWorks Women in
Tech series, bringing the tech community together at our Hub
became temporarily impossible. But we successfully shifted our
events into a digital-first format, announcing our 2020 Technology
Impact Awards finalists live online to an audience of hundreds, and
hosting Virtual Connection Days to link dozens of small businesses to
tech experts one-on-one to adopt new technology to help them adapt
to the pandemic’s new realities.
Equally inspiring was seeing BC’s tech community respond to new
social movements to commit to leading on diversity, inclusion, and
equity for all underrepresented and marginalized people. I would like
to thank not just company leaders but workers too, for driving
grassroots change.
Looking forward, BC Tech is committed to expanding its efforts not
just for the tech sector, but for the provincial economy as a whole.
Technology is more than ever an accelerator for every industry. As we
recover together, BC’s tech companies can support—and lead—the
way to a more prosperous, sustainable, and innovative tomorrow.
BC Tech’s 27th year brought opportunities to grow our offering to
power BC’s economic recovery across sectors.
