Electronic monitoring can be an effective approach to domestic violence if implemented carefully. It allows for increased control over offenders to restrain aggressive behavior and enhance victim protection. However, domestic violence situations are complex with dynamic risk levels. Electronic monitoring works best for medium-risk cases combined with behavioral programs over the short term (up to 1 year) to avoid counterproductive long-term interventions. Staff face challenges in interpreting large amounts of electronic data and preventing burnout. With proper technology, eligibility criteria, assessment protocols, and attention to data protection and staff well-being, electronic monitoring can fit within an approach to domestic violence.
