Michigan State University is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. The Rock, a gift from the Class of 1873, has been a fixture on campus ever since originally being placed in the "Sacred Space" near Beaumont Tower, where it became a popular hang out for young couples and was known as the "Engagement Rock." In 1986, the Rock was moved to its current location east of Farm Lane on the north bank of the Red Cedar River, where layers of paint now cover the original inscription of "Class '73."
