Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

니코와 사촌 로만은 모두 한 마을에서 자랐다.
유고슬라비아 내전의 참상 속에서 힘든 시절을 보내던 니코와 그의 친형은 어린
나이에 입대했다.
보스니아 내전에서 형은 전사했고 참전한 니코는 수 많은 잔학 행위를 목격했고
직접 행하게 되면서 정신적 고통과 극심한 우울에 시달리며 인생을 냉소적으로
바라보게 되었다.
전쟁이 끝날 무렵, 니코는 구 유고슬라비아에서 일을 구하여 정상적인 삶을 사
는 데에 어려움을 겪었다.
니코의 사촌 로만은 새로운 삶을 시작하기 위해 미국의 리버티 시티에 정착
오직 폭력만을 알았던 니코는 향후 10년 동안 발칸 반도의 범죄 세계에 몸을 담
았다.
12. 모험에의 소명04
유고 슬라비아 내전 때 니코와 고향 친구들의 15인조 부대가 적의 매복에 당했
을 때, 니코는 간신히 탈출하게 된다.
그리고 친구들 중 한 명이 모두를 팔아 넘겼다는 결론에 도달했고 친구들이 묻
혀있는 곳으로 돌아가 시체들을 파내어 확인한 결과 자신 외에 두 명이 더 살아
남았다는 것을 깨달았다.
니코는 복수를 위해서만이 아니라 스스로 모든 것을 끝내고 앞으로 나아갈 수
있도록 반드시 배신자를 찾아내어 처단할 것을 맹세했다
13. 모험에의 소명04
전쟁 후 범죄 세계에 있으면서 감옥 생활을 하게 된다.
그리고 출소 후 러시아인 범죄자 레이 불가린의 조직에 가담하여 밀수와 인신매
매 일에 뛰어들었다.
그러던 중 유고슬라비아에서 이탈리아로 향하던 밀수선이 아드리아 해에서 가
라앉는 일이 벌어져 니코는 살기 위해 배를 버리고 헤엄쳐야 했고 배에 있던 모
든 것이 바다로 가라앉았다.
니코의 부인에도 불구하고 불가린은 니코가 의도적으로 배를 침몰시키고 돈을
훔치려 했다고 믿었고, 불가린의 세력이 워낙 강대했기에 니코는 불가린의 영향
력에서 벗어나기 위해 상선대에 합류
14. 모험에의 소명04
화물선 플라티푸스의 선원들과 함계 대서양에서 향후 7달을 보내고 있었던 니
코는 로만의 편지를 읽으며 생각에 잠겼다.
그 동안 로만은 자신이 리버티 시티에서 이룬 아메리칸 드림을 니코와 향유하기
바라왔고, 니코 또한 로만이 말하는 맨션, 스포츠카, 돈, 아름다운 여자들을 고대
하고 있었다.
마침 살아남은 두 친구 중 하나인 플로리안이 그 곳에 거주하고 잇다는 것을 알
아냈고 불가린에게서도 더욱 멀어지고 싶었던 니코는 리버티 시티로 갈 것을 결
심하였다
15. 정신적 스승과의 만남04
여기서 정신적인 스승은 아니지만 주인공 니코를 리버티 시티에서 적응할 수
있게끔 도와 주는 안내자 같은 역할을 한다. 니코 또한 로만이 관련된 일이면
위험을 무릅쓰고 도와준다.
로만 벨릭 (Roman Bellic)

허풍이 심하고 검열삭제를 밝히는 인물
로 미국의 ‘리버티 시티’에서 택시 회사
를 운영하면서 택시 기사 일을 하고 있
으며 일확천금을 꿈꾼다
니코에게 빚쟁이들로부터 자신을 구해
달라거나 더러운 일과 관련한 친구들을
태우게 하는 등 여러 가지 민폐를 끼친
다. 비록 멍청한 짓도 많고 허풍 덩어리
지만, 그래도 인간적인 성격이고 니코를
진심으로 아끼기에, 미운 정이 든다.
16. 첫 관문의 통과04
그러나 리버티 시티에 도착하자마자 로만의 성공담이 모두 허풍이었다는 것
이 드러난다.
로만은 허름한 아파트에 살며 조그마한 택시 회사를 운영하고 있었고 도박으
로 범죄자들에게 빚을 지고 있었고 고리대금업자들의 위협을 해결 하며 로만
의 택시 사업을 돕기 시작했다.
그러면서 로만의 또 다른 빚쟁이이자 파우스틴 패밀리의 맴버인 블라드의 일
을 마지못해 돕게 된다
그런데 블라드가 로만의 애인인 맬로리를 건드리면서 마찰이 빚어졌고 니코
가가 블라드를 처단하기 된다.
그로인해 둘은 파우스틴 패밀리의 보스 미카일 앞으로 잡혀 오게 되는데 블라
드의 바람과는 정반대로 미카일은 니코의 소행을 눈감아 준다.
그리고 니코는 그의 밑에서 일하게 된다.
17. 시험04
하지만 이미 미쳐가고 있었던 미카일의 거듭되는 횡포로 어둠이 드리워지고 있었
고 니코는 그의 명령으로 라이벌케니 페트로비치의 아들 레니를 살해하게 되면서
사태는 파국으로 치닫는다.
미하일 파우스틴/Mikhail Faustin
러시아 마피아 두목으로 표면상 세력이
커보였던 블라디미르 글레보프의 보스.
그의 명령으로 레니 페트로비치를 죽인
것이 자신에게 크나큰 위협이 된다고
생각한 디미트리가 배신을 함.
디미트리의 설득에 넘어간 니코의 공격
을 받고 도망치다가 자기 클럽 옥상에
서 총을 맞고 사망한다.
믿었던 의형제인 디미트리에게 배신당
한 것을 망연해하면서.
18. 적대자04
디미트리 라스칼로프/Dimitri Rascalov
GTA4 최대의 만악의 근원.
러시아 마피아 두목인 미하일 파우스틴
의 심복.
미하일의 돌출적인 행동으로 위험해진
다고 생각하여 미하일을 배신을 함.
니코가 그를 죽이게 만들었으며 그 직
후 니코가 과거에 몸담았던 곳의 보스
인 불가린과 함께 나타나면서 니코를
배신한다.
디미트리 라스칼로프는 위기를 모면하기 위해 니코에게 미카일을 제거할 것을
종용했고, 그 이후 모든 것이 해결되려는 듯하던 순간 디미트리가 니코를 제거
하기 위해 불가닌과 손을 잡고 로만의 아파트와 택시 회사를 불태운다
19. 적대자04
니코와 같이 일하던 마약상인이 꼼짝없이 붙잡히게 되고 그 앞에 미쉘이 나타나고
CIA의 간부들 중에서 United liberty Paper 이라는 가짜 회사에 근무하는 정체불명
의 남자와 리버티 시티 지하세계의 일인자인 가베티 패밀리의 수장 존 그라벨리의
일을 돕게 된다.

"Three's a crowd" 미션에서 니코와 만나게
되는 니코의 첫 애인
솔직하고 소박한 성격으로 니코의 호감을 사
지만, 나중에 코카인이 든 가방을 들고 있는
니코와 제이콥 앞에 나타나 정부를 위해 일
하고 있음을 밝힌다. 처음부터 감시하기 위
해 의도적으로 니코에게 접근했던 것.
20. 협력자04
제이콥은 쇼틀러의 딜런 거리에 데려가서 니코에게 자신이 위험한 거래를 하는데
경호를 해달라고 부탁하면서 총을 주며 이 거래를 해결한 뒤 전화번호를 준다

듀크스에 사는 마약상으로 카리브 해
출신이며 그쪽 사람답게 자메이카 식
영어를 쓴다.
로만과 친한 사이이며 쇼틀러의 딜런
주로 니코에게 항상 총격전이 벌어지는
자신의 거래에 관련된 경호 임무를 부
탁한다.
로만과 함께 니코에게 가장 많은 도움
을 주는 인물.
니코의 목숨이 위험한 일들을 할 때 같
이 싸워준다.
21. 그 밖의 협력자04
말로리의 도움으로 보한에 정착한 니코는 엘리자베타와 플레이보이를 비롯한 마
약상들과 접촉하게 된다
더 나아가 패트릭 매리어리를 포함한 아이랜드 갱단, 패트릭의 여동생 케이트 맥
리어리, 드웨인, 페고리노 패밀리의 카포레짐 레이, 등을 만나게 된다.
레이를 통해 평의화의 진입 장벽을 허물기 위해 안달하고 있는 지미 페고리노와
일하게 되면서 마피아의 세계에도 발을 들인다
레이의 도움으로 살아남은 두명 중 하나인 플로리안을 찾아내는데 성공하지만 그
는 범인이 아니었음이 밝혀지고 다르코가 범인이었음을 알게 된다.
22. 소명의 거부04
그들의 답례로 다르코와 조우하게 된다. 로만은 다르코를 살려 보냄으로써 그가
저지른 일들로 인해 평생 고통받으며 살아가게 할 것을 권유하고, 니코에게 선
택권이 주어진다. 다르코를 죽이면 니코는 그의 결정으로 인해 기분이 나아지지
는 않았닥 밝히고, 반대로 다르코를 살려주면 처음에는 실망하지만 스스로 옳은
일을 했다며 마음을 다진다. 어떤 길을 택하든 마침내 니코가 모든 것을 끝내고
그가 바라왔던 마음의 안식을 찾았음은 확실해 보인다.
이 스토리의 ‘소명의 거부’ 단계는 뒤에 쯤 나온다 니코가 미국에 오게 된 가
장 큰 이유는 복수를 위해서만이 아니라 스스로 모든 것을 끝내고 앞으로 나
아갈 수 있도록 반드시 배신자를 찾아내어 처단할 것을 맹세했기 때문이다
23. 동굴 가장 깊은 곳으로의 진입04
그 후 니코는 부하의 배신으로 위기에 몰려 있던 페고리노로부터 패밀리의
운명이 걸린 “마지막 하나”의 의뢰를 받게 되는데 그것은 다름 아닌 다미트
리와의 헤로인 거래였다. 처음엔 일언지하에 거절했으나 페고리노의 계속되
는 설득에 마지못해 승낙한다.
과거를 제쳐 두고 디미트리와의 거래를 성사시킬 것인지, 페고리노에게 등
을 돌리고 다미트리에게 복수를 할 것인지 양자택일의 상황에 놓인 니코는
가장 의지하던 두 사람, 로만과 케이트에게 조언을 구한다.
24. 동굴 가장 깊은 곳으로의 진입04
로만은 그걸 어떻게 알았는지 디미트리가 어디서 무엇을 하는지 알고 있었
고, 디미트리가 다시 니코와 거래를 할 것이라 들었다고 한다. 위치를 알아
낸 니코는 당장이라도 디미트리를 죽이러 가겠다고 하지만, 로만은 지금까
지 함께 갈망해 왔던 꿈을 위해 니코에게 더 이상의 살인은 그만두고 디미
트리와 다시 거래할 것을 권한다.
케이트는 돈을 위해 자신의 신념을 저버리지 말 것을 종용한다.
25. 시련04
(거래)
로만의 뜻에 따라 닷 한번 디미트리와 거래를 하기로 마음먹은 니코는 필과 함
께 디미트리를 마주한다. 하지만 디미트리는 니코의 뒷통수를 쳐서 한 몫 챙기
려는 수작이였고 헤로인과 대금을 둘 다 훔쳐 달아나 버렸고 니코와 필은 교전
끝에 헤로인과 돈을 손에 넣게 된다.

케이트의 말을 듣고 자신의 신념에 따라 복수를 결심한 니코는 자신을 리버
티 시티에 데려다 주었던 화물선 플라티푸스로 향한다. 디미트리는 배의 화
물칸에서 부하들이 헤로인을 옮기는 것을 감시하고 있었고 니코는 혈혈단신
으로 배를 습격하여 디미트리를 처단한다.
거래 / 복수 분기
26. 보상04
거래
이 소식을 들은 로만은 부자가 되었음에 환호했으나 ‘자신의 신념’을 따르지
않은 것에 실망한 케이트는 로만의 결혼식에 함께 가자는 니코의 제안을 거
절하고 더 이상 연락하지 말라는 말을 남긴다
그 후 로만과 멜로리는 결혼식을 올린다.
복수
니코가 신념에 따랐다는 것을 들은 케이트는 기뻐하며 로만의 결혼식에 함
께 가자는 제안을 받아들였고, 로만은 돈을 벌지 못한 아쉬움을 감추지 못
했으나 니코가 해야 할 일을 했음을 이해한다. 그리고 필은 페고리노 패밀
리가 완전히 무너졌음을 알고, 전화로 리버티 시티를 떠나면서 잘 지내라고
인사한다.
27. 귀환의 길04
복수
하지만 니코의 배신에 분노한 페고리노가 니코를 죽이기 위해 로만과 멜
로리의 결혼식장을 급습하여 총을 난사했고, 여기서 케이트가 총에 맞아
즉사한다.

그런데 디미트리가 보낸 자객이 니코를 암살하려다 제압되는데, 자객이
쏜 빗나간 총알에 로만이 맞고 사망한다. 망연자실한 니코는 제이콥의
도움으로 디미트리와 페고리노의 은시처를 찾아내어 습격한다. 그때, 페
고리노는 탐욕에 눈이 먼 디미트리에게 살해 당하고 디미트리는 헬리콥
터로 도주한다.
28. 부활04
복수
모든 것을 끝내고 그녀와 함께 새 출발을 하려 했던 니코는 좌절하고 제이
콥과 로만과 함께, 이제 모든 지하세계를 적으로 돌린 페고리노의 은신처
로 향한다.

드디어 둘이 꿈에 그리던 아메리칸 드림이 현실화 되던 순간.
리버티시티에서 함께 생활해 온 자신의 가족인 로만이 눈앞에서 죽게 된다.

그때, 페고리노는 탐욕에 눈이 먼 디미트리에게 살해 당하고 디미트리는
헬리콥터로 도주한다.
니코는 그 뒤를 보트로 쫓아가다, 잠시 뒤 경찰 헬기를 탈취한 제이콥과 합
류하고, 해피네스 아일랜드에까지 이어진 추격전 끝에 디미트리는 자유의
여신상의 그림자 속에서 니코의 손에 죽는다.
하지만 로만을 잃은 니코에게 이것은 승리가 아니었다.
30. (복수)영약을 가지고 귀환04
모든 것을 끝내고 그녀와 함께 새 출발을 하려 했던 니코는 좌절하고 제이
콥과 로만과 함께, 이제 모든 지하세계를 적으로 돌린 페고리노의 은신처
로 향한다.
북쪽 카지노에 숨어있던 페고리노 일당을 습격하나, 페고리노는 뒷문을 통
해 도주한다.
니코는 오토바이를 타고 해안선을 따라 페고리노를 추적한다. 잠시뒤 경찰
헬기를 탈취한 제이콥과 합류하여 그를 뒤쫓는다.
