Decorations for SRP
-Inflatable dinosaurs
-Find It, either buy or make your own
-Sand art
-ant farms
Gardening props – place books in a wheelbarrow, bring in tools from home
Construction props – Hardhats, construction toys, emergency cones, etc.
Burrowing animals- any stuffed animals like rabbits, hedgehogs, and the like.
Indiana Jones themed decorations could be good for Digging into the Past.
Die cuts are available from the State Library available via interlibrary loan.
Bean Worm- use pantyhose and beans
Shelf Talkers- pattern for this in the Supplemental manual. A way to add décor to books.
Bulletin Board Ideas
-Hieroglyphic message w/ a decoding key so kids can figure out the message.
-Worm display with underground tunnels

Ch. 3 Just Dig It!
-Jack and the Beanstalk – use a big book for story time and have a related craft, Beanstalk collage.
Books- Plant A Little Seed, The Family Tree, and Grandpa Green
-Gnomes – do gnome-themed story times and crafts
-Gnome kisses, Pinecone Gnomes, mini gnomes and make a gnome hat and beard to wear
during story time.
Books- see what books you have on gnomes, David the Gnome
-Caterpillars – there are several crafts where you can make caterpillars
-Name that Veggie trivia, Garden headbands
Stone Soup for story time, bring in a pot and some vegetables to integrate into the story time.
-Make Grass heads, see supplemental manual
-Pirate theme- do a story time with a pirate book
-Pirate Name Generator so each child can have a pirate name on a name tag.
-Reader Theater- break up story into several parts and assign.
-Puffy Parrot craft – pipe cleaners
The Root Children – great book published around 1900 with an accompanying craft

2. Ch. 4 Dig into the Past
Egypt
-Mummy Roll- Create teams for three and make it a race to see who can wrap their mummy the fastest
in toilet paper. Then, add the mummy headdress
-Make a mummy headdress or small crown
-Egyptian Dance off
-Pyramids or ziggurats out of paper or sugar cubes.
-Hieroglyphic bookmarks – use a name generator to spell out a child’s name in hieroglyphs to make a
bookmark
Dinosaurs
Books: Barnum’s Bones, Dinosaur Mardi Gras & The hidden bestiary of marvelous, mysterious, and
(maybe even) magical creatures
-Paper Plate dinosaurs – two varieties. Stegasaurus with one plate or a brontosaurus with two.
-can use brads to make the legs move.
-Make large dino feet for story time.
-Lascaux – virtual tour of the cave in France.
Books- The Secret Cave, Cave Baby, and Cave Painter of Lascaux.
-Cave Paintings craft-use paper bags and crinkle and draw pictures with either paint or markers
-Make a Cave diaorama- use tissue boxes, paper etc
-Make a reading cake in your library
Ch. 5 Burrowers
-Books: Compost Stew, The Diary of a Worm, and The Ant & the Caterpillar (LA emphasis)
-Bird Eating Worms game –use clothespins and pieces of pipe cleaners to have a race to see who can
pick up the most worms in a given amount of time.
-Feslt Board on Composting
-Poem “Five Little Worms”
-Recycled Sock Worms – fill a sock with beans or rice and decorate the outside with googlely eyes etc.
-Hungry Ant Proped Rhyme Craft – pop pom ant inside a small bucket made from a plastic cup and
balloon stretched over the bottom.
-Prairie Dog Tunnel Maze- use a box lid and straws to create a maze
-Hedgehogs-make paper crafts with hedgehogs. Use recylcled books or paper
-Origami Sea Turtle – template can be found on the NOAA website.
-Sea Crab Craft- construct from paper plates and fasten with brad so the claws move.
Bunny Boo Boo
-washcloth/yarn
-Slinky Lizard- make with large piece of construction paper. Cut so the body has aslinky effect.
-Snake Yarn Craft- cut out a snake shape from corkboard or sturdy cardboard and wrap in different
colors of yarn.
-Coiled Snake- Make from paper towel rolls and paint and attach googley eyes.
Ch,7 Under the Earth
Books- My Snake Blake, Dave the Potter (2013 LYRC)
-Mining for Gems- in a Sterilite container, mix magnets with beans and use magnetic wands.
