The document summarizes the activities of the Volunteer Eco-educational Camp Prosvet held from July 1-10, 2013 at Toksovo lakes in the Leningrad region. Over 10 days, 120 volunteers from Russia and other countries cleaned up shores and collected over 1,500 garbage bags. Educational activities were also held on environmental topics. The camp helped initiate cooperation with local authorities on sustainable solutions like waste container installation. Feedback was positive and the camp aims to continue its important work in the region in future years.

Tasks for the Camp:
o Cleaning up littered shores of
four Toksovo lakes;
o Cultural and educational
program for the participants;
o Search for systematic solution
how to save the Lakes territory
from littering by holiday-
makers.

5. Place for the Camp is not a random
choice…
o It is a unique natural and landscape
complex for the Leningrad region.
o Local inhabitants are involved into
intensive activities to preserve the
Lakes - they hinder unsanctioned
development, clean up the Lakes
shores, improve the recreation sites
by themselves.
o Public regional organization of eco-
activists protecting citizen rights to a
favorable environment - ‘Toksovo
lakes’ - managed to broaden the
borders of the existing specially
protected natural territory and also to
create new territories of regional
significance on Toksovo lakes.
It is worth helping where it is needed rather than where
you want.

6. For 10 days our volunteers have collected 1535 garbage
bags or 184,2 cubic meters or almost 10 Kamaz lorries

7. 35 % of the collected waste has been sent for
recycling:
• 150 kilos of plastic
bottles (PET)
• 98 kilos of aluminum
• 507 kilos of other metals
• 5 000 kilos of glass

8. Our volunteers have cleaned up the littered
shores of the lakes Kurgolovskoe, Svetloe,
Khepoyarvi, Veroyarvi.

9. We have agreed upon installation and
maintenance of the waste containers with
the Administration

13. 120 people have become
participants of the Camp.
Volunteers from Russia (Moscow,
Saint-Petersburg, Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod,
Perm), Spain, Italy,
Ukraine, Turkey and Finland.
Age of the participants varied
from 5 to 55 years!

14. The following survey has been conducted among
holiday-makers of Kurgolovskoe lake
Would you refrain from driving a car
on the lake shore if you got to know
that:
• The Water Code of the RF forbids
any auto or motor vehicles on the
shore line;
• Prohibition on cars allows holiday-
makers to enjoy rest really naturally –
no music, no fumes…;
• Prohibition on cars is your
contribution to preservation of the
lake Nature (soil cover, animals – all
will thank you)

15. Thanks to digital laboratory «Scientific
entertainment» we have managed to study the water
in 4 lakes and a spring on Kurgolovskoe lake

Conclusions: parameters of water from the lakes Veroyarvi, Svetloe and Kurgolovskoe are
normal for swimming and other household needs. Water in Khepoyarvi is very clean and
also drinkable. But the results of study of spring water on the lake Kurgolovskoe are
alerting. The materials were transferred to PRO ‘Toksovo lakes’.
