Peter Buist worked in the Japanese space program as a European GNSS engineer. He was motivated to work in Japan to gain experience in a high-tech non-Western environment and to continue his graduate research involving developing, testing, and conducting experiments in space. He worked for Japanese aerospace companies Toshiba and NEC, gaining experience in all stages of developing new GPS technology. Working in Japan provided stable long-term research opportunities due to available resources, though it required strong self-motivation as a foreign engineer. Buist's experience gave him knowledge of both space and user segments of GNSS systems and future career opportunities in Japanese language skills and industry experience.
Dr. Alberto Conti gave a presentation on new frontiers in astronomy. He discussed several space telescopes that have advanced astronomy, including Hubble, Chandra, Spitzer, and others. He outlined the timeline of past and future astronomy projects. Conti explained that astronomy is facing big data challenges as the amount of data collected grows exponentially each year, noting the petabytes of data that will need to be analyzed from future instruments. New analysis and visualization tools will be required to handle the massive data volumes.
In 2013 werd voor het tiende jaar op rij de ESNC georganiseerd. In dit artikel wordt
het winnende Nederlandse idee van 2013 gepresenteerd, naast twee Nederlandse
winnaars van een special topic prijs.
Willem van Dorp used his Veni grant to push the limits of electron beam induced deposition (Ebid) technology to write atomic structures. His previous research with Kees Hagen achieved 1-nanometer dots and lines, smaller than any other lithography. For his Veni research, van Dorp will modify an electron microscope in Denmark to implement a new writing strategy to deposit single atoms reproducibly by eliminating randomness in the deposition process. His research since has found that the decomposition of gas molecules during deposition is less favorable than expected, with unwanted material sometimes remaining, so he is looking for ways to improve the deposition purity.
The document summarizes the experience of Peter Buist, a former participant in the EU-Japan Centre's Vulcanus in Japan program. The 1-year program allowed European engineering students to study and work in Japan. Peter interned at Toshiba's space department, where he helped develop a GPS-based attitude system for a Japanese spacecraft. After graduating, he joined Toshiba as a GNSS engineer to further develop this system, which launched in 2003. Peter worked on other projects for Japanese space agencies and gained fluency in Japanese. He believes the Vulcanus program gave him invaluable experience in the European-Japanese space industry and an advantage in his current collaborative research.
In July 2015, a study tour organised by students from Delft University of Technology came to visit us at the GSA. This the report they have written on the visit.
The document discusses ways to improve productivity in the workplace. It defines productivity as the ratio of output to resources used, with labor productivity specifically being the ratio of output to labor inputs. It then lists several ways to improve productivity, including task changes, task redesign, optimizing work flow through organizational design, automation, and office design to boost the work environment. The graph shows that labor productivity growth is slower when employment is increasing and higher when employment is decreasing.

1) The movie Cast Away tells the story of Chuck Noland, a FedEx executive who is devoted to his job and neglects his girlfriend Kelly as a result.
2) After his plane crashes in the ocean, Chuck washes ashore on a deserted island where he struggles to survive alone for four years.
3) When Chuck is finally rescued, he returns home to find that everyone had given him up for dead and Kelly has married someone else. Chuck must now learn to move on from his ordeal.
JAXA has developed a Balloon-based Operation Vehicle (BOV) to provide a long and cost-effective microgravity environment for scientific experiments. The BOV separates from a high-altitude balloon and maintains a stable microgravity condition inside a shielded inner shell for over 30 seconds using thrusters. GPS experiments were conducted from the BOV at around 40km altitude. Future flights will test controlling the BOV's attitude to achieve supersonic horizontal flight duration.

SmartBoards have been shown to motivate both teachers and students and make learning more engaging. Multiple studies found that students responded positively to the use of SmartBoards in the classroom and enjoyed the collaborative and interactive nature of the technology. SmartBoards also allow teachers to easily incorporate multimedia into their lessons and promote basic skill development through collaborative activities.
1) The document is about Jaime Lee Tostenrud and provides details about her background, family, interests, and future plans.
2) She was born and raised in Overland Park, Kansas and currently lives with her mother and two cats.

The document discusses how human resource (HR) departments can be viewed as either a cost center or business segment within an organization. It provides definitions for cost center and business segment. While HR is typically considered a cost center that does not directly generate revenue, the document argues that HR can also indirectly act as a business segment by reducing costs associated with hiring, training, and retention in order to improve productivity and profits. Effective HR practices like recruiting the right employees, providing proper training, and motivating workers can help turn HR costs into profits for the organization.

Technology refers broadly to how humans use tools and science to control their environment. More specifically, technology can be defined in several ways:
1) An artifact or hardware, which are items created to solve practical problems like tools, computers, and medicines.
2) A methodology or technique, which is the application of knowledge or science to create a procedure or practice such as painting techniques, using a microscope, or laser surgery.
3) A system of production, which is applying knowledge or science to a manufacturing process like an automobile assembly line.
4) A social-technical system, which is an interrelated group of people, artifacts, and devices that work together as a whole to meet a need
