1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
In this presentation, I will be explaining the opening to the film 2001: A
space odyssey.
2. The opening begins with a rumbling sound which is heard along with a
blank screen and the first shot. This gives the idea of a space craft taking
off and leaving earth as the outline of the planet can be seen when the
camera pans up away from it. This can create an idea of the theme being
based in space and about humans leaving our home planet. The opening is
effective because it immediately establishes that this is a sci-fi film that
explores human space travel.
The outline of earth can vaguely be seen.
3. As the craft leaves earth, the moon is seen with a shade of light from the sun
rise behind it. The pounding drums give the sense of a god like planet being
revealed which is the sun. The music emphasizes the complexity and power
of space and the planets shown. This is used because the sun is the most
important and most powerful star in our galaxy.
The light source is only coming from the sun and is also reflecting off the
moon showing the beauty of space and the importance of the sun for life
within this galaxy.
4. The music becomes louder and climatic as the sun is more and
more revealed showing its beauty and power. The director
wants to explore space and show the audience a visually
pleasing film.
This is an iconographic image that represents sci-fi space films.
