This document provides research on the target audience for a psychological thriller film project. It identifies that the primary target audience is 18-25 year olds as they tend to enjoy thrillers and horrors more than other age groups. Research found that psychological thrillers are often aimed at older adult audiences aged 25+, as the complex themes and plots can confuse or bore younger viewers. Examples of existing psychological thriller films and posters are also analyzed to help inform the design of marketing materials for the project. Audience research through questionnaires helps understand what aspects appeal to fans of the genre.

3. Target Audience Profile
This project is for people who enjoy psychological
thrillers/horrors, the age rating for this would be based at 18-25
year olds as they tend to enjoy thrillers/horrors compared to
elders and young children as it doesn’t scare them as much, and
most horrors are based at the age rating of 18. some younger ages
may watch it as they may not find it scary, which is fine as long it
is fine with their guardians, but the lowest age rating would be
aimed at 15 year olds. with this project you could have any
personality to watch it as many people with different personalities
can like any films. Any race or ethnicity can watch it unless they
don’t find it right or don’t want to.
4. Audience Research
Psychological thrillers are often aimed at older, adult audiences, often
ageing from 25 onwards. The confusing twists and turns and mature
themes of psychological thrillers story lines may be too much to handle
for younger audiences and may scare them or confuse them to a certain
extent where they will get bored of the film.
These suspenseful reads focus on the devious depths of the human
mind. These would be good for people with certain careers like
therapists and also for people who don’t fully understand people who
are psychological and need help.
Psychological thrillers explore their characters' innermost thoughts and
motivations, allowing us to examine how their decisions propel the plot
forward into the extremes of human ethics and morality. The genre
prompts us to consider the darkness in others and ourselves.
The fear is typically something material, such as grotesque or horrifying
creatures, monsters, serial killers, or aliens, as well as the splatter and
slasher film genres, which derives its frightening effects from gore.
5. Audience Research
Psychological thrillers often incorporate elements of mystery and include
themes of crime, morality, mental illness, substance abuse, multiple realities
or a dissolving sense of reality, and unreliable narrators. This can lead to the
audience being curious into what will happen and will intrigue them into
watching more films which are similar.
They give viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise,
anticipation, and anxiety.
“A compulsive need to examine broken behaviour patterns and take an
adrenaline ride through the twists and turns of crime fiction fascinates us all
with the genre”
psychological thrillers focus on story, character development, choice, and
moral conflict; fear and anxiety drive the psychological tension in
unpredictable ways.
thrillers provide a level of excitement and emotion in its audience that few
genres can achieve. It allows its readers and viewers to be entertained by
their own intense reactions to what is going on in the story, producing
emotions that they normally wouldn't experience outside of fiction.
7. Existing Product
There I a contrast of light and
dark colours, this can show that
at the beginning of the film it
was difficult to escape the
entrapment that the character
was in, and that it was dark and
depressing for them. But when
they got out they finally saw the
light and found happiness.
This uses a collage of
different images with
different angles and
location. The images have
been presenter as if it is a
window with rain pouring
down it, which matches
with the title of the film.
This appeals to the
audience by showing a
range of different
images, and having a dark
feel towards the poster
as it uses dark colours
throughout.
This will make the audience want to buy/watch/play it because it uses
a different technique with the images, it is clearly shown as a dark kind
of film which may also appeal to certain audiences.
8. Existing Product The colours are also dark as
well to show that the film
isn’t happy and cheerful, but
instead it is a dark thriller
with twists and turns which I
would like my story line to be
like. It uses two images in one
showing ne innocent image
and the other being gruesome
and it is presented in the way
that the woman would see it.
This would appeal to the
audience as it already
shows that it is a thriller
with the use of both
images as it shows a
murder in a window
across from the woman.
This would appeal to the audience as it shows an innocent
woman watching a murder through her window which could lean
the audience to think what might happen next, or how the
woman may be involved and what she may do.
The lighting focuses on the
woman's face and the hand in
the window which clearly
shows that she is the main
character, and something
behind that window has
something to do with her.
9. Existing Product
The colours of this image are
dark, but also have one
certain colour which contrasts
the colours. The dark may
mean gruesome, scary and
disturbing, and the orange
may mean happiness, joy and
cheerfulness. This may mean
that throughout the film it is
gruesome but at one point,
mainly at the end, they find
happiness and joy.
The title may appeal to the
audience as it already shows
that the film will be
disturbing and the image also
shows a scared character
through the binoculars.
The audience may be drawn
to this as it is a thriller
shown by the title and also
the small images showing a
girl with a shadow behind
her, almost as if it is
following her, trying to kill
her. As the slogan also says
“every killer lives next door
to someone”
10. Existing Product The colours contrast and
show that the film is a
thriller and gruesome by
using the colour red which
may symbolise blood and
torture, or even murder.
The lighting is used on the
woman’s face, the house
and the typewriter, which
shows that she is the main
character, most of the
activity is filmed in the
house (most of the murders
and torture) and the type
writer is used by the writer
in which she kidnaps.
This might appeal to the
audience as it shows it is
a thriller with the red
title, which represents
blood and torture, and
also in the image below
it shows the character
with a weapon about to
hit the main character.
