This document summarizes the evolution of the Balanced Scorecard as a strategic management tool through three generations. The first generation Balanced Scorecard proposed by Kaplan and Norton in the 1990s included financial and non-financial measures grouped into four perspectives. Over time, refinements were made to address weaknesses in filtering measures and linking measures to strategy. The second generation introduced strategic objectives to guide measure selection and better represent organizational strategy within each perspective. Practical experiences found the initial design vague and open to interpretation. Further developments continued to refine how the Balanced Scorecard could better implement and measure organizational strategy.
