My middle age phase has always been of much challenge and struggle. Growing up in a
family with many traditional beliefs in this new era influenced me both negatively and
positively. The low status of our family and the alcoholic nature of my father made it hard to
acquire a living. In order to cater for my sibling, I got myself a job at the industrial area in our
small town. My mother was an outstanding politician mother was an outstanding politician; she
was capable of changing the world. However, this was a time when sexismdictated women in
the society. The role of women in the community was undermined and reduced to giving birth
and taking care of children. Reflecting back to my childhood, I was raised under Catholic
religion (TCO, 1, 4, 6). I attended school under the sponsorship of the same Catholic Church.
Education at this time was not far from the traditions that were taught during our forefathers.
Back at home, the traditional roles of children waited for us while at school, educational values
and religion were forced into us. This engulfed my opportunity to explore the world. The
punishment was always there for those who deviated from social norms. The punishment was not
optional and if it would be in this era, then I would refer to it as a criminal charge. As I continued
developing into a teenager I developed some peers. Life with friends was like a dream, having
those who love and care for me was probably what I yearn for. I almost deviated from my
academics and traditional culture after engaging myself with the wrong crowd. My mother was
kin to me and never allowed me to waste any time with my friends (Macionis and Plummer,
2002). For this reason, most parents are careful in raising their children. My mother engaged me
in her farm work which included planting crops, looking after cattle, harvesting and other vital
farm activities. From my mother, I have learned good work ethics which I currently apply in my
business. My educational, life and career goals have greatly been influenced the class, culture,

religion, and ethical teachings. My parents’ expectations were very different from the goals that I
had set. I eventually graduated from my high school and got a chance to work in one of the well-
known airports in the country. This was the most adventurous time in my life. Most of my role
was to offer service to the clients by assigning airplanes, rooms, and taking care of their luggage.
Due to my clear understanding both English and French, I also acted as an interpreter among
other works. At this time I came to understand the aspect of discrimination, racism, and social
class among our society. There were many differences in the way the white people and the
blacks were treated. Secondly, the first class was given the first priority because they had a lot of
money than the low class would offer. From here I acquired some principles that I later applied
to my business. I learned that when running an entity, it’s good to formulate rules that are
favourable to the low, middle, and upper class in the society. I continued to support my family
both physically, financially, and emotionally. My two sisters and three brothers rapidly grew
older and the aspect of competition emerged. In my family, gender was insensitive and everyone
played any role (TCO 3, 4, 6). As we divided the family roles among ourselves, the burden of
running many duties lessened and I settled down to my family. From my family traditions,
upbringing and values, I have been able to raise a family on the positive life of my previous life,
while withdrawing out the negative side of it. My life with my wife and three children has been
established on my true ethical values acquired from my past, teaching our children how to cope
with hard and challenging situations in life. My wife has now broken the view on the role of
women by acting as a gender activist. She educates women group on the importance of their
roles in the society. She has a wider view of the world as she takes time in engaging as in sports,
and other leisure activities. Although my father was addicted to alcohol and was not able to
provide for the family, I had to put this as my past and take into account of my own family as a

father. As I grow older I still have to deal with some issues in life while interacting with people
worldwide. Unfortunately, with the good, there is always bad, I am now able to understand
individuals’ challenges in terms of race, color, and creed issues. These beneficial encounters and
observations have managed and even changed their societal and social convictions making a
world altogether different from what I have seen (TCO 3, 4). It's actually true that one grows
older, they increment in knowledge and insight. This say is vital in my background in making the
individual I am today. This sociological course has allocated me to ponder how genuinely
compelling these angles were in molding the individual I am and are consistently fortifying my
perspectives with each other every day I develop (Macionis, 2016).
