Exelon has partnered with Illinois Institute of Technology and Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center to create the Opt4STEM program, a five-year partnership focused on increasing awareness and exposure to STEM fields through various educational opportunities for students. So far, the partnership has hosted many programs including resume building workshops, engineering competitions, facility tours, classroom discussions, and community service events. Over 40 students have participated in IIT STEM camps or taken college courses through the program as well, showing its success in engaging students with STEM.

The Evolution of Kanazawa Technical College
In April of 2018, Kanazawa Technical College (KTC) will open the new school year as International College of Technology Kanazawa (ICT). The educational program planned for this transformation is radically different from anything a Japanese 5-year College of Technology (or Kosen) has tried before. It combines an intensive education on a boarding-style campus with compulsory overseas study and collaborative projects from local communities and industries in a primarily English curriculum. How does a school originally founded to produce factory workers in the Kosen system evolve into an internationally-minded, interdisciplinary engineering school with a focus on authentic design projects? This talk will illustrate the social, organizational, and human factors that have driven KTC to become international in a comparison of the historical context of the Kosen system to modern drivers for change.

Nate Golter graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science, concentration in Civil Engineering and a GPA of 3.06. He has relevant coursework in civil engineering design and infrastructure as well as engineering experience in materials processing and testing. Golter has also participated in service trips to Nicaragua and Bolivia related to water distribution and sanitation. He held leadership roles such as president of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and was a STEM summer camp instructor.
FYEE 2015 Paper
The document describes a STEM freshman outreach program called STEM FRESH that was created to increase retention of engineering students at The Citadel. Over the 2014-2015 academic year, the program held 7 events including activities with industry mentors, faculty presentations, and social events. Attendance data found that retention rates increased with more events attended, up to 100% for students attending all 7 events. Participants also maintained a average GPA of 2.8 or higher. Based on the success of increasing retention and academic performance, the program will continue and expand to include sophomore initiatives.

The Girls in Engineering Program (GiE) aims to engage secondary school girls and inspire them to consider engineering careers. In 2015, the program engaged over 1,480 students through in-school workshops and on-campus activities. Key achievements include delivering 43 in-school workshops, engaging 1,146 students, and seeing increased interest in math and engineering subjects at partner schools. The program provides hands-on engineering activities led by industry professionals and university students to introduce students to different engineering fields and careers.

- 1. Exelon is dedicated to creatinga diverseand inclusive environment and actively looks for ways to engage and give back to the communities in which we work and serve. The Opt4STEM five-year partnership between Exelon, IllinoisInstitute of Technology (IIT) and Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center has provided many students access to variouseducational opportunities. This programfocuses on increasing awareness and providingexposure to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field. So far this partnership has hosted many programs for students: February 25, 2015: An Exelon HR representative, Cary Burgio, lead a resume building workshop. March 2, 2015: IIT held a bridge-building competition where Von Steuben student, Ariana L., qualified for the international competition held in Portland. April 20, 2015: 20 pre-engineering students visited Exelon’s Serviceand Training Center in Braidwood, IL. Here the students learned about nuclear energy and experienced the training simulator. April 27, 2015: An Exelon engineer, Christian Peisker, discussed careersin nuclear energy with three pre-engineering classes at Von Steuben. April 30, 2015: The student advisory group has its first meetingat Von Steuben and the partnership is named: Opt4STEM. May 9, 2015: The Chicago River Clean-up Day, sponsoredby Exelon, had participation from both employees and 65 students. May 15, 2015: 6 teachers attended IIT’s Interprofessional Projects (IPRO) Program’s User- Centered Design Camp. July 9, 2015: Chicago’s mayor, RahmEmanuel, and ComEd’s SVP of Governmental and External Affairs, Fidel Marquez, hosted the entirefreshman class (350 students) of Von Steuben for a campus tour and lunch. In addition, Von Steuben students participated in IIT’s summer STEM camps (33) and took college coursework in Computational Science (4) and Introduction to Engineering (4). We here at Exelon are proud of what the Opt4STEM partnership has accomplished so far and excited to see what the future of the programholds!
