(20.3 cm)\nDescription: <P>Saint Anthony Abbot's test of faith at the hands of a clutch of demons is represented here in a charming, if somewhat naive, Late Gothic style. Dressed as an abbot, the saint holds a crosier, which terminates in a tau cross and a mendicant's bell; he is surrounded by fantastical beasts. The inscription suggests that the roundel was a donation by a local priest, who kneels before the saint next to his coat of arms.</P> <P>This roundel is stylistically consistent with other works known to have originated in southern Germany. (80 x 55.9 cm)\nStyle: Renaissance\nDescription: The French king, Louis XII (1462-1515), clad in an ermine-trimmed mantel, kneels at his devotions and gazes at an unseen religious image or altar. If all the panels of this stained glass still existed, we would probably see a form of self-representation favored by French kings and their cousins, the dukes of Burgundy. The heavy textiles behind Louis function as one of the "walls" of what would be a little room created in a privileged location near the altar of a royal chapel or church. These textile walls would shield him from winter drafts as well as the inquisitive eyes of his courtiers. They were set into larger windows made up of small segments of clear glass in either a diamond or round (bull's-eye or bottle) pattern, held together with strips of metal.Within the quatrefoil (four-lobe design) are jousting knights, who bear the coats of arms of the Geuder and Rieter von Kronburg families, with their heralds gathered below.
