Hand-arm vibration exposure can cause hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), but it is often overlooked in warm climates where cold temperatures do not trigger attacks. A study conducted awareness training and surveys of employees and contractors at an alumina refinery in Australia over 4 phases to understand prevalence of HAVS-like symptoms. They found 66% of employees using powered tools reported symptoms like tingling and numbness. Management committed to reducing vibration exposure by restricting high-risk tools and sourcing alternatives. Contractors were also encouraged to reduce worker vibration exposure.
