Pension funds should consider investment decisions in the context of sponsor covenant, funding levels, and investments holistically. They should also consider whether the sponsor's financial health correlates with pension assets and the sponsor's ability to withstand funding shocks. Funds should evaluate if increasing allocation to return assets fits their risk policy while considering limitations of volatility as a risk measure and tail risks. Additionally, funds should look at opportunities in the market but be aware that recent returns may have driven up risk asset prices and lowered volatility, making them less attractive.
