On March 11, 2004, Madrid was attacked by radical Islamist terrorists in coordinated bombings of the Atocha train station that killed 191 people and injured over 1,850. In the days following the attacks, the Spanish government falsely claimed that ETA, a Basque separatist group, was responsible. This lie by the government led to the dismissal of Prime Minister José María Aznar and a victory for the Socialist party in elections held shortly after on March 14.
