PlanetLab is a global research network supporting network services development since 2003. It has over 1000 researchers using its 530 nodes across 717 sites to develop technologies like distributed storage, networking mapping, peer-to-peer systems, and distributed query processing. Cloud computing provides resources through services rather than direct access, while grid computing involves aggregating distributed resources for tasks like number crunching. The objective is to understand how PlanetLab can maintain benefits while preparing for the future, and to compare grid and cloud computing models in terms of assembly, offered services, and differences in scale. The conclusion is that cloud computing will become the main information technology as it realizes the vision of grid computing through standardization and dynamic pricing models.

Each peer in a distributed hash table may host different numbers of virtual servers, causing load imbalance. Most algorithms use asymmetric rendezvous nodes to balance loads, but this can cause further imbalance. The paper presents a novel symmetric algorithm where each peer independently reallocates servers using a global index based on histograms approximating the system state, avoiding overhead and guaranteeing performance metrics. Unlike prior work, no nodes experience skewed workloads due to the algorithm.
A method for balancing heterogeneous request load in dht based p2 pIAEME Publication
This document proposes an adaptive load balancing method for distributed hash table (DHT)-based peer-to-peer (P2P) systems to address load imbalance caused by skewed access distributions. The method distinguishes between query routing load and query answering load. It uses three strategies: 1) adaptive object replication to balance query load by replicating popular objects, 2) adaptive routing replication to share routing load by duplicating overloaded nodes' routing tables, and 3) dynamic routing table reconfiguration to relieve overloaded nodes by replacing their entries with less loaded nodes. The strategies aim to dynamically redistribute load from overloaded to underloaded nodes. Experiments showed the balancing algorithms effectively improve system load balance and performance.

Simple Load Rebalancing For Distributed Hash Tables In CloudIOSR Journals
This document summarizes a research paper on simple load rebalancing for distributed hash tables in cloud computing environments. It discusses how distributed file systems partition files into chunks stored across nodes to enable parallel processing, but this can lead to unbalanced loads. The paper proposes a fully distributed load rebalancing algorithm where underloaded nodes identify and "steal" work from overloaded nodes to improve load balancing without relying on a centralized coordinator. Simulation results show the distributed algorithm outperforms prior centralized and distributed approaches in terms of load imbalance, movement costs, and overhead.
Hybrid Scheduling Algorithm for Efficient Load Balancing In Cloud ComputingEswar Publications
This document presents a hybrid scheduling algorithm for efficient load balancing in cloud computing. The algorithm uses both round robin and priority-based scheduling approaches. It first assigns priorities to incoming job requests and then executes them in a round robin fashion. The algorithm aims to minimize overall response time and data center processing time. It is evaluated through simulation and found to perform better than round robin, priority-based, and equally spread current execution algorithms alone in terms of optimized response time and data center service time.
Iaetsd improved load balancing model based onIaetsd Iaetsd
This document proposes an improved load balancing model for cloud computing based on partitioning. It analyzes static and dynamic load balancing schemes using the CloudAnalyst tool. Static schemes like round robin performed similarly regardless of system load. Dynamic schemes analyzed current system status and allocated jobs accordingly. Analysis showed dynamic schemes had better response times than static schemes, with throttled and equally spread current execution performing best by balancing load based on system conditions. The proposed model implements multiple dynamic algorithms to further reduce response times and improve user satisfaction in cloud systems.

The document describes a novel Concurrent Error Detection (CED) scheme to counter fault-based attacks against RSA encryption. The scheme exploits RSA's multiplicative homomorphic property by verifying if the product of encrypted messages equals the encryption of the product of plaintexts. If a mismatch occurs, all ciphertexts will be suppressed. This allows easy integration of fault attack resistance into architectures already resistant to other side-channel attacks like power analysis. The time and memory overhead can be traded off using a parameter k.
This document discusses a new scheme called Flow Slice (FS) for load balancing traffic across multiple paths in multipath switching systems while maintaining packet order within each flow. FS splits each flow into slices at intervals larger than a threshold and balances load at a finer granularity. Analysis of internet traces shows FS achieves near-optimal load balancing with a slicing threshold of 1-4 ms while limiting out-of-order packets to negligible levels with modest hardware complexity. Simulation results validate the theoretical analyses.

This document proposes a two-step framework for efficient genre-specific semantic video indexing. The framework first classifies videos by genre, then applies genre-specific concept models to reduce the dataset and more accurately detect concepts like people. Experiments on a 28-hour dataset showed the two-step method was more efficient and effective than methods ignoring genre, with an 11.3% average performance loss when filtering 80% of the data for concept detection.

The document discusses a scheme for peer-to-peer (P2P) based multimedia sharing in online forums and user-generated content communities. It proposes a system called Multimedia Board (MBoard) to support sharing of multimedia like images and videos between users in a P2P fashion to reduce load on central servers. Analysis of data from Disney discussion boards showed properties of forum usage that informed the MBoard design. Simulation results using real traces demonstrated MBoard can significantly lower the load on servers while maintaining high quality of service for users.

A Symmetric Load Balancing Algorithm with Performance
Guarantees for Distributed Hash Tables
Abstract
Peers participating in a {it distributed hash table} (DHT) may host different
numbers of virtual servers and are enabled to balance their loads in the reallocation of
virtual servers. Most decentralized load balance algorithms designed for DHTs based on
virtual servers require the participating peers to be asymmetric, where some serve as the
rendezvous nodes to pair virtual servers and participating peers, thereby introducing
another load imbalance problem. While state-of-the-art studies intend to present
symmetric load balancing algorithms, they introduce significant algorithmic overheads
and guarantee no rigorous performance metrics. In this paper, a novel symmetric load
balancing algorithm for DHTs is presented by having the participating peers approximate
the system state with histograms and cooperatively implement a global index. Each peer
independently reallocates in our proposal its locally hosted virtual servers by publishing
and inquiring the global index based on their histograms. Unlike competitive algorithms,
our proposal exhibits analytical performance guarantees in terms of the load balance
factor and the algorithmic convergence rate, and introduces no load imbalance problem
due to the algorithmic workload. Through computer simulations, we show that our
proposal clearly outperforms existing distributed algorithms in terms of load balance
factor with a comparable movement cost..
