Component level results from the recently published IPS Amazônia - Social Progress Index for the Brazilian Amazon study (ipsamazonia.org.br). The study, measuring human wellbeing across nine states in the Brazilian Amazon and covering nearly 24 million people, has revealed several areas of striking difference between the Amazon region and the overall state of Brazil.
The Brazilian Amazon region scores lowest compared to the rest of Brazil on Water and Sanitation, with low scores registered over most of the region. IPS Amazônia results find that the Amazon scores more than 47% lower (35.35) than the country as a whole (74.87).
Acre state—home to the indigenous people living near the border with Peru who made headlines recently by emerging from isolation—had an average IPS Amazônia score across its municipalities of 54.09, lowest of the 9 states of the Brazilian Amazon, largely due to challenges with water and sanitation.
Only 39% of the population in that state has access to clean water.
