Carl Wilhelm Scheele discovered several new elements in the late 1700s including chlorine and bromine by heating salts with other chemicals or acids. He isolated chlorine by heating sal ammoniac and manganese dioxide and isolated bromine by heating sea water and manganese dioxide. However, credit for discovering these elements went to others who published the findings after Scheele's death.
