The document proposes optimizing the shuffling process in Hadoop MapReduce by storing intermediate output in memory instead of writing it to local disk. It presents a methodology of using a two-level intermediate file storage with memory as the first level and local disk as the second. An experiment testing this approach on a word count MapReduce job with 1 and 6 nodes showed a 1-2% speed up when using the in-memory approach compared to the traditional approach of writing intermediates to local disk. Future work is suggested to further optimize flushing of intermediates from memory to disk for very large jobs.
