Cypress looks toward the 2007-08
season with a new look including
plenty of new faces in a new set of uni-
forms. After spending a season as the
defending state champs and then the
defending conference champs, Cypress
is back in a familiar and comfortable
position as underdogs this season.
This year’s squad will look to rebuild
the program after a disappointing 14-
16 losing record and a fifth place fin-
ish last season despite an experienced
team. Last season was the first year
that head coach Margaret Mohr did
not bring Cypress to the playoffs since
1998-99 and also Cypress’s first losing
season since 2000-01.
The Charger underdogs are a
motley crew of youth and energy who
hope to surprise opponents and fans
while earning back the Cypress repu-
tation of being overachievers.

tenth season as the Cypress head
coach shares her outlook on the season
ahead:
T
his year will be an exciting
year for the Lady Chargers. In
some ways it will be a season of
unknowns, but along with these un-
knowns will be many surprises.
With many new faces and only a few
old ones, the Cypress Chargers will
definitely have a new look but hopefully
enjoy some of the same old success
of past teams. How these young new
players develop and adapt to the Char-
ger mantra of “Hard Work Pays Off”
will determine what this team looks
like at the end of the season.
The team takes the same previous
road travelled by the Charger teams of
the past by playing a tough pre-season
schedule. We open up in the always
challenging Merced Tournament, play
defending state champion Mt. Sac in
mid-November, and end the month
with cross-town rival Cerritos in the
annual Thanksgiving-Eve Classic.
December gets no easier starting with
the 24th annual Lady Charger Classic
which the Chargers have won the last
four years.
Also in December, the Lady
Chargers will take on an always tough
Ventura team, cross-town rival Long
Beach City, and up-and-coming Glen-
dale before participating in the always
competitive De Anza Tournament after
Christmas.
After the New Year, the Charger
schedule takes off starting with a tough
non-conference game versus Canyons
to tune up the Chargers for the tough-
est conference in the state – the Or-
ange Empire Conference.
If the young Lady Chargers work
hard and mature, they will be in the
race for the conference championship.
Leading the way will be sophomore
posts Saw-Ann Bryan and Letisha Ba-
tiste and redshirt freshmen Candyce
Carlberg, Janice Griesser, and Jaz-
zlyn Walker. All three redshirts have
improved dramatically in their redshirt
year.
This freshman class has the chance
to be one of the strongest collectively
that the Chargers have had in quite
some time. These ten freshmen all
bring great enthusiasm and work ethic,
along with unique skills that will add
to the Lady Charger program. Keke
Jolly, Ashley Johnston, Sequana Nor-
ris, and Tara Smith bring athleticism
and quickness that will help greatly in
transition and on the defensive end.
Shooters Michelle Salemi, Nyesha
Green, Ana Astrologo, Marissa Main,
Noor Dahdul, and Chelsea Oldfield
will give the Chargers the best collec-
tive outside threat that I have had in my
ten years here.
The challenge for the team and the
coaching staff will be to mesh all these
talents into a cohesive force. More
than likely, there will be a period of ad-
justment and discovery as this
year’s team finds and produces
their identity. If the 2007-08
Chargers grow into their best
selves, this unknown team will
be known come February.

M
argaret Mohr has built a Charger legacy based on hard work, in-
tegrity, and overachievement. This year, she is rebuilding a Cypress
program that suffered a low year and returns just two sophomores.
Prior to last year, Mohr had put together two straight seasons where Cypress
lost just 11 games combined. In 2004-05 she led the underdog Chargers to her
first State Championship. Mohr also took the college to seven consecutive post-season appearances between 2000 and 2006.
In 2006, Mohr led Cypress to their first Orange Empire Conference Championship since 1988.
Throughout both her playing and coaching career, Mohr has been no stranger to basketball success. Her high school play-
ing career laid the foundation for the future, leading La Reina High of Thousand Oaks to the 1983 Southern Section Class
1A title and earning both CIF-SS and National Catholic Player of the Year honors. She was inducted into the Ventura County
Sports Hall of Fame on June 19, 2004.
Mohr then played for legendary coach Joan Bonvicini at Long Beach State and helped lead the 49ers to a 33-3 record and a
berth in the Women’s Final Four in 1987. After graduation, Mohr began her coaching career as an assistant at Long Beach
State and Santa Clara before taking the head coaching job at Woodrow Wilson High in Long Beach, guiding the Lady Bruins
to a pair of Moore league titles and a CIF runner-up finish. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Mohr was given the unique
opportunity to be an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. At the Sparks she had the opportunity to coach such
names as Lisa Leslie and Chamique Holdsclaw.
Her goals for the Lady Chargers’ program remain the same: to help her players achieve academic excellence, athletic
excellence and personal fulfillment. “I want the women in our program to leave
Cypress College with all the tools to be successful in today’s competitive world and
with two years of great memories and dreams come true”
Mohr received her Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Long Beach State in
1988, and her Masters of Arts in PE from LBSU in 1996.

What I Did on my Summer Vacation

A
fter one great summer as an as-
sistant with the LA Sparks and
with the coaching change to Mi-
chael Cooper as the head coach, I was
not sure if my summer dream job was
going to continue. It did! The Sparks
wanted me back for a second season
and I wanted to be back!
Even though we were going to be
without Lisa Leslie due to her pregnan-
cy, I was excited to work in the WNBA
again. After going through one season
– I was probably more sure of myself
because I knew what to expect and I be-
lieved I had something to offer. I was
also looking forward to working with
one of my favorite Lakers, Michael Coo-
per.
I knew Coach Cooper was a great
player but I got to see first hand what
a great person he is. He is passionate,
knowledgeable, and kind. It was great
to talk to him about many things: X’s
and O’s, NBA legends, and Seinfeld! I
am truly glad to have worked for him
and with him.
Again I was able to work alongside
Michael Abraham, the other assistant
and former assistant coach of mine at
Long Beach State. As always, he made
whatever we were doing – coaching
games, practicing, and traveling, even
more fun with his knowledge and hu-
mor.
Without Lisa Leslie, we knew we
would have a tough road but losing
Chamique Holdsclaw to retirement five
games in made the road even tougher.
On top of that, point guard Temeka
Johnson was coming back from knee
surgery. As you may have guessed, we
struggled all season
win-loss wise. One
year 25-9 and the
next 10-24. What
is crazy is that I still
loved it. I think
what continually
amazes me is the
professionalism of
the Sparks players.
They continued to
work hard, remain
coachable, and be
great role models.
I know they were
frustrated with our
record but nobody
pointed fingers.
The players just
kept giving their
best.
Probably the
weirdest thing
about pro basket-
ball is that you are
thrown together for
five months – daily
at practice, games,
and on the road. You forge strong bonds
and then someone gets traded or injured
or you look up and the season is over. It
is like being on a five month journey and
then everyone gets off and goes overseas
or to other commitments. But what re-
mains are great memories and lasting
friendships. I have been truly blessed
with the opportunity to coach with the
LA Sparks and every year I bring back
new ideas and knowledge to the Lady
Chargers. I am not sure when the jour-
ney will end but I am enjoying the ride.

the first round draft pick… Candyce

Assistant Coach - Mike Ford (4th Season)
Fresno State 1987
Mike Ford joined the Lady Chargers staff after a successful coaching tenure at Los Alami-
tos High School. He was the Griffins coach for twelve seasons, and his squads qualified ten
times for the CIF playoffs. He also served as an assistant coach at Westminster and L.A.
Washington high schools. Ford, who still teaches at Los Alamitos, is a graduate of Fresno
State University with a degree in mathematics and a masters degree in Educational Tech-
nology from Azusa Pacific.
Assistant Coach - Alycia Sumlin-Lyres (5th Season)
Boise State 1999
In her fifth season with the Chargers, Lyrse will work with the offense and tutor the Cy-
press guards. Lyrse played collegiately at Boise State University where she earned Big Sky
Outstanding Freshman honors. She was the team’s and conference’s leader in steals with an
average of 2.4 per game and was third on the club in scoring at 9.0 points per game. Lyrse
is a graduate of Clovis High where she helped lead the team to the North Yosemite League
title, earning the Fresno Bee’s Player of the Year honors.
Assistant Coach - Joyce Proctor (1st Season)
CSU San Bernardino 2006
Proctor returns to Cypress as a coach after playing for Coach Mohr in 2001-03. This is
Proctor’s first stint on a collegiate staff but has been involved in youth coaching over the
past five years. While a player at Cypress, Proctor made her way to 487 career rebounds,
sixth in the Cypress record book while earning the team’s Most Valuable Player award.
She then moved on to earn a scholarship from Cal State University of San Bernardino
where she was named second team all-conference. She graduated from San Bernardino
with a B.A. in Liberal Arts.
Assistant Coach - Gary Polk (2nd Season)
Loyola Marymount 1978
Polk comes from a long history of basketball coaching most recently as the boys basketball
coach at South Pasadena. Polk was also an assistant at Dominguez Hills where he was the
recruiting coordinator.As a varsity women’s coach, he spent two years each at Whitney and
LB Jordan reaching the CIF quarterfinals with Whitney. Polk played basketball and track
at Gardena High before going on to Azusa Pacific on the JV squad. He earned his bachelors
from Loyola Marymount in business administration and a masters from Dominguez Hills.

Cypress College Student
Corros will be handling Charger administration du-
ties, game day operations, and travel management.
She comes to Cypress from San Gabriel Academy
where she was a three year varsity basketball play-
er while also managing three other teams.

Saw-Ann Bryan
On the Passion of a Basketball Player
Saw-Ann Bryan was the freshman captain on the
2006-07 squad. This year she returns as a sophomore
captain looking to lead bounce back from a disap-
pointing season and bring out the best in herself and
her squad for this upcoming year.
I
have had only one Love that
never let me down. A love so
strong that I can’t even bare to
think where I would be without
it. This Love is beyond my ex-
pectations towards my lessons of
life and my lessons on becoming
a woman. The love for basketball
made me who I am. I will stand in
front of the whole world and say I
am proud to be a basketball player.
The aggressiveness within basket-
ball excites me. The ball going in
that basket completes me. The
ball getting stolen by me satisfies
me. From winning games to los-
ing games, the fact that I can learn
from it keeps me going.
Sharing my passion and feel-
ing passion from other teammates
keeps me motivated. Experienc-
ing the Cypress name that’s planted
on my jersey made me feel part of a team with heart. I
love everybody that made me better. Brandi Thom-
as showed me that strength can get your way to
snatching that rebound from an opponent and
putting it right back in that basket. Brae
Butler showed me that the art of movement with the
ball can get you right to that basket for a lay-up or a
jump shot.
I don’t think people can understand basketball un-
less they have been there for the three to four hour prac-
tices of sweat and tears. I don’t
think people can understand how
much we sacrifice our bodies just
to improve our faults and perfect
our greats in order to make it to
the next level.
I have so much respect for these
coaches because when I have done
something wrong, I can’t look
into their eyes proudly because
I know they expected more from
me. Even when I was gasping for
air from the running they would
make us do, they still wanted us to
fight.
Basketball isn’t just physi-
cal, it is also mental and it takes
heart to play this game. Fresh-
men turning into sophomores and
incoming freshmen, I hope you
realize that basketball isn’t just a
game, it takes love and passion to
make it a reality of life. Just know
that, “You may be the best in a pond, but there is a whole
ocean out there.”

ing spot her freshman season playing
in all 30 games and starting in 20... was
Cypress’s third leading scorer with 7.5
points per game and third leading re-
bounder with 5.3 per game… added 25
steals, 7 blocks, and 22 assists... against
Orange Coast, Bryan collected a dou-
ble-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds,
and 2 steals.
High School Highlights: Was a four
year varsity standout for Carson starting
strong with an 80% free throw shoot-
ing percentage her freshman year…
earned the Gatorade Rookie of the Year
Award.
Personal: Born on February 15th,
1988... mother is Jocelyn Bryan... sib-
lings are Owen and Lilibeth… major-
ing in architecture… enjoys writing
poetry… favorite quote is, “You may be

After surprising many in 2005-06 by winning the
Orange Empire Conference championship, the
veteran 06-07 squad came into the season with a tar-
get on their back. Cypress was led by all-conference
returning sophomores Brae Butler and Corianne
Felix followed by six other returning sophomores
and six promising freshmen.
The Charger season was punctuated by several
ups and downs. Cypress had a rough start going
two-and-out in the Merced tournament which even-
tually led to a disappointing 0-4 start. They quickly
bounced back with five straight wins including Cy-
press’s fourth straight Lady Charger Classic champi-
onship. The Chargers went into a sharp downturn
from there losing four straight before waking up in
time to win the De Anza consolation championship.
Cypress had a 7-9 pre-season record before
heading into Orange Empire Conference play, to
defend their championship. The OEC proved itself
as the highest ranked conference in the state as
Cypress battled with top ranked teams like Or-
ange Coast, Fullerton, Santa Ana, and Saddleback.
The Chargers made their way through conference
balancing wins with losses including a highlight
overtime win at Irvine Valley. As the season wound
down, Cypress was on the bubble in the playoff
picture. Cypress sealed their fate in the last game of
the season with a lackluster 73-59 loss at Saddleback
marking the first time since 1999 that Cypress would
be absent from post-season play. The 14-16 season
record was also the first time Cypress had a losing
record since 2001.

HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT
SARA WORKS
Arguably the best player in the history of Cypress College women’s bas-
ketball, Works is the school’s all-time leader in points scored (1,395) and
second in rebounding (578) despite having her junior college career ended
prematurely by a knee injury.
She also holds the school record for points in a single game -
man or woman - when she tallied 45 against American River in
December of 1994.
During her career, the Lady Chargers went 45-22 and advanced
to the State quarterfinals in 1993-94.

San Diego, Calif. – The playoffs began with
36 teams vying for the top spot in the state,
after the dust had settled, Cypress came out
on top. The Chargers came in undermanned
and undersized, but ended their season with
a victory over Pasadena 69-65 to win the
State Championship.
The Chargers were underdogs throughout
most of the playoffs technically only sup-
posed to win their first game. Cypress rel-
ished the underdog spot and were unfazed
as they took out one opponent at a time
through pure heart. Cypress faced off with
the 29-1, 1st seed Pasadena College Sun-
day afternoon. The Chargers came out en-
ergized starting the game with a 10-2 run.
With a 38-26 lead at halftime, it looked like
the Chargers were going to pull out a blow-
out upset. When the second half began,
Pasadena came out with something to prove
going on an 18-2 run to take the lead from
Cypress. Just when most would concede
that their dream season was over, Cypress
charged back to take the lead for good and
win by 4.
The sophomores came up big for the Cham-
pionship. Despite struggling through the
first two games of the tournament with a
broken toe, Rosalyn Omoruyi stepped up
when it counted the most to be the leading
scorer and rebounder of the game with 23
points and 14 rebounds. All State Tourna-
ment selection Mia Seagraves contributed
some big baskets with 17 points while the
Tournament MVP selection Brittany Imaku
contributed 8 assists to go along with her 8
points. Long distance shooter Ruta Autele
hit 2 three-pointers from the field and Pau-
la Reed clogged up the middle on defense
and grabbed 6 defensive rebounds. Reserve
guard Niann Hill produced a key bucket in
her limited minutes.
The freshmen were not to be outdone as they
showed what to look out for next year. All-
state forward Ana Fakatou put up 10 points
and 8 rebounds while three-sport athlete
Brianna James grabbed 5 rebounds.

Athletic Director
Diane Henry
Henry begins her 14th year as the Dean of Physical Education and eighth year as Athletic
Director. Henry began her Cypress College career as the women’s athletic trainer in
1978, becoming the trainer for the school in 1980. During her tenure, Henry has served on
numerous boards and committees within the campus.
She has a Masters in Education from Azusa Pacific University and a B.A. and M.A. in
Physical Education from CSU Long Beach.

Teresa Wang
Wang is in her third year as the Charger’s Sports Information Director. She began her
stint at Cypress as an assistant for the women’s basketball team where she was part of
the 2004-05 State Championship staff.
She has her B.A. from University of California Berkeley in economics, a master’s degree
in Sport Management from the University of San Francisco, and a masters in Clinical Psychol-
ogy from Antioch University.

Athletic Trainer
Scott Tucker
Tucker is in his 23rd year as the head athletic trainer. He is in charge of the health care of
all of Cypress’s student athletes. He is known for his commitment to the strength and
conditioning of our student athletes and conducts several on going volunteer programs.
He is a graduate from the University of Utah, where he also taught athletic training
courses as well as first aid/CPR. Tucker is also an adjunct faculty member - teaching courses in
athletic training and First Aid.

Bedard begins his sixteenth year as a counselor and professor at Cypress College. This will
be the ninth year he has been responsible for the athletic counseling component of the
athletic program.

ypress Community College boasts a well rounded p h y s i c a l
education curriculum along with a successful sports p r o g r a m
featuring 13 intercollegiate teams and a strong support staff of
professionals. The school also has a wheelchair basketball program.
Student-athletes are provided quality individual instruc- tion, the chance to
develop to their full potential and the opportunity to earn a four-year college or
university scholarship.
Cypress, which offers seven sports for women and six for men, has had a solid
line-up of teams and individual athletes who have excelled since the college first
opened its doors in 1966. In recent years, the baseball, softball, women’s soccer
and women’s basketball programs have taken center stage.
In 1997 the baseball and softball squads, coached by brothers Scott and Brad
Pickler, captured state championships. The baseball crown was the third of the 1990s
under the direction of Scott Pickler who has over 700 wins in his 22 years at the school
and captured the state championship again in 2003. Trevor Hoffman of the San Diego
Padres, who played at Cypress in 1986 and 1987, is a four-time Major League all-star
and holds the Major
League record for career saves.
BradPickler,inhis 19 campaigns, has also had a
great deal of success. He has led the softball team
to five state titles while winning over 800 games. The
Chargers were the first California school to capture three consecutive state cham-
pionships (1997, 1998, 1999).
Cypress only started playing intercollegiate women’s soccer in 1991, but the
late Ray Haas quickly built the program into a consistent winner. The Chargers
won State Championships in 1998, 1999 and 2004. Cypress’ 27-0 season in 1999
was rewarded with a No. 1 national ranking by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Cypress captured its first women’s basketball
championship in 2005. Margaret Mohr’s team
set a school record with 28 wins against five de-
feats.
Cypress enjoys strong support from the com-
munity and student body, who are part of the tra-
ditionally popular athletic program.

Cypress College
Established in 1966, Cypress College is
a full-service community college offer-
ing Associate degrees and certificate
programs as well as a place for students
to complete their lower division gen-
eral education before transferring to a
four-year institution. The college sits
on 110 acres of land and is composed of
12 major instructional buildings which
house both traditional classrooms and
laboratory facilities for science, art, com-
puter technology, photography, mortuary
science and other programs. The college
has also grown from an initial enrollment
of 1,600 to a current student body in
excess of 13,000.
