    , P ,and volume , V , of a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature.The results of the
    experiment is shown in a graph of 1/v against P shown in Figure 6

                                             7
Based on the the graph

(a) State the relationship between P and V

      ………………………………………………………………………………………….

(b)   The relationship between P and V is given by the equation;
                 P V= k
      where k is the gas constant.

      (i)     Calculate the gradient , m , of the graph 1/v against P .
              Show on the graph how you determine the gradient.

      (ii) By using the value of gradient, determine the value of the gas constant , k.

      (iii) By using the value of k, determine the value of V when P = 20.0 N cm-2

(c)   Determine the value of V, when the pressure P = 12 N cm -2.
      Show on the graph how you determine the value of V

(d) State one precaution to ensure that the gas mass is kept constant.

Explain how you would design a submarine so that it can : (i) float and submerge (ii) occupy the soldiers safely (iii) detect war ship (iv) move with high speed (b) Figure 5 shows a food container used for keeping the food warm. The container is able to maintain the temperature of food for a long time. The container is fixed and cannot be moved Figure 5 The following table shows the characteristics of materials which could be used to make the food container. Charateristic Density/kg m-3 Melting Specific Thermal point / o C Heat capacity/ conductivity J kg-1 oC-1 Material 2 710 P 660 910 High 910 Q 27 600 Low 700 R 1 050 240 Low 1 670 S 2 600 1 200 Low 800 T 3 800 2 020 High You are asked to investigate the characteristics of the materials in the table which could be used to make the food container as in the figure above. Explain the suitability of each characteristics in the table and hence, determine which material is most suitable to be used to make the food container. Justify your choice 6
  • 7. 6 A student carried out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the pressure , P ,and volume , V , of a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature.The results of the experiment is shown in a graph of 1/v against P shown in Figure 6 Figure 6 7
  • 8. Based on the the graph (a) State the relationship between P and V …………………………………………………………………………………………. (b) The relationship between P and V is given by the equation; P V= k where k is the gas constant. (i) Calculate the gradient , m , of the graph 1/v against P . Show on the graph how you determine the gradient. (ii) By using the value of gradient, determine the value of the gas constant , k. (iii) By using the value of k, determine the value of V when P = 20.0 N cm-2 (c) Determine the value of V, when the pressure P = 12 N cm -2. Show on the graph how you determine the value of V (d) State one precaution to ensure that the gas mass is kept constant. ……………………………………………………………………………………………. 8
