This document contains a sermon given at First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi on May 21, 2017 about Matthew 27:41-54, which describes Jesus' crucifixion. The sermon discusses how Jesus was mocked and crucified to pay for the sins of humanity, referencing the Jewish tradition of sacrificing lambs for atonement. It emphasizes that Jesus willingly took on the role of the sacrificial lamb to save all people, including those who mocked and killed him.
FOREWORD
IT was on an April day, a.d. 33, not
long after the Day of Pentecost,
that these things happened. They
covered a brief period of not more than
fifteen hours — from the time of the eve-
ning sacrifice, 3 p.m., until candlelight
the next day. But what a memorable
fifteen hours they were; and what issues
have flowed out of that day!
In the Footprints of our Faith
A journey through the Holy Land, by Jesús Gil and Eduardo Gil
This series of articles about the Holy Land, which began as a way to celebrate the Year of Faith opened by Pope Benedict XVI on October 11, 2012, and closed by Pope Francis on November 23, 2013. The original texts appeared over those two years in Crónica, a monthly publication for the faithful of the Prelature of Opus Dei, under the title “In the Footprints of Our Faith.” Here we present a compilation of these articles, sponsored by the Saxum Foundation, with only minor changes.
We were inspired by St. Josemaria’s suggestion (repeated many times) to immerse ourselves in the Gospel, to take part personally in every scene in a way that our lives would never be the same after reading the Word of God. This is why, in addition to recent historical and archaeological investigations, we draw primarily from the writings of those who can best guide us: the Fathers of the Church, who have passed on our Tradition; the Magisterium and the Liturgy of the Church; and, of course, the founder of Opus Dei. Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, St. Josemaria’s first successor, was invaluable in helping us better understand his teachings, a task now carried out by the current Prelate of Opus Dei, Bishop Javier Echevarría.

Football has an expression for what happens when a key player is injured and a substitute must enter the game to play for him. The next man up is the one who must come in and do everything expected by the coach so that the team can succeed. Unfortunately, too many Christians are sitting on the bench and are not ready (emotionally!) to get in the game. Moses provides an example of a man who was eager to save God’s people but ended up removing himself from the service of God and when told by God to go is full of reasons why he shouldn’t go. What is keeping you from getting into the game. (Bonus: the analogy is flawed!)
The final characteristic of a sacrificial follower of Christ who makes sacrificial followers of Christ who go is a heart for the lost, which is more than just a willingness to evangelize.
A verse by verse commentary on Acts chapter 8 dealing with the early life of Paul and his persecution of the church. Philip is the key person in this chapter with his confrontation with Simon the Sorcerer and the Ethiopian eunuch who was converted.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Jeremiah 33:3 ESV (God’s phone #)
3 Call to Me and I will answer you, and will tell
you great and hidden things that you have not
known.
11. 42 “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He
is the King of Israel; let Him come down now
from the cross, and we will believe in Him.43 He
trusts in God; let God deliver Him now, if He
desires Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
15. 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said,
“This Man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them
at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour
wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to Him to
drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see
whether Elijah will come to save Him.” 50 And
Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and
yielded up His spirit.
16. 51 And behold, the curtain of theTemple was
torn in two, from top to bottom. And the Earth
shook, and the rocks were split. 52The tombs
also were opened. And many bodies of the
saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and
coming out of the tombs after His resurrection
they went into the holy city and appeared to
many.
18. 54When the centurion and those who were with
him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the
earthquake and what took place, they were
filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son
of God!”
Matthew 27:41-54 ESV
20. He cleansed theTemple twice – at the
beginning of His ministry in John 2 when He
drove out the moneychangers and then here at
the end of His ministry in Matthew 24 & Mark
11 with one very important difference.
21. Matthew 24:1-3 ESV
1 Jesus left theTemple and was going away,
when His disciples came to point out to Him
the buildings of theTemple. 2 But He answered
them, “You see all these, do you not?Truly, I say
to you, there will not be left here one stone
upon another that will not be thrown down.”
23. Signs of the End of the Age
3 As He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples
came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when
will these things be, and what will be the sign of
Your coming and of the end of the age?”
Matthew 24:1-3 ESV
25. Mark 11:15-16 ESV
15 And they came to Jerusalem. And He entered
theTemple and began to drive out those who
sold and those who bought in theTemple, and
He overturned the tables of the money-
changers and the seats of those who sold
pigeons. 16 And He would not allow anyone to
carry anything through theTemple.
27. The word vessel refers to utensils of worship.
Mark is telling us that Jesus not only shut down
the commerce of theTemple but He also shut
down the religious rituals of theTemple.
28. The priests carried the blood from the sacrifices
in basins into the holy place to sprinkle on the
altar of incense.
Then they had to take the burned carcasses of
the sacrifices out again.
29. So, there was a continual procession of priests
through theTemple area all day long, carrying
out the system of rituals.
But on this day, when Jesus came into the
Temple He stopped all of the religious rituals in
their tracks.
30. He brought to a close the offerings of Israel for
the first time since the Maccabees in 164 B.C.
Why?
Because Jesus refused to acknowledge the
Temple worship as having meaning or value any
longer.
31. Though the Jewish priests and money changers
went right back to their former activity as soon
as Jesus left, and though these practices would
continue for forty more years until the Romans
destroyed theTemple, God no longer accepted
those sacrifices.
32. A few days later, when Jesus went to the cross
as the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of
the world, He declared all other sacrifices to be
null and void.
The OT rituals and sacrifices were mere
symbols and shadows pointing to the reality of
the true “Lamb of God” – and Jesus Himself was
that Reality!
36. During the days ofTemple worship, a family
would offer a Passover lamb for sacrifice at the
Temple as covering for the sins of that family.
That ritual teaches us much about the love of
our Heavenly Father and what the sacrifice
really means.
37. Some weeks before Passover, the head of the
household would cull out the most perfect lamb
in his flock.
To be acceptable, the lamb could not be
purchased but had to be raised by the family.
38. The lamb would be brought into the household
as a pet.
The kids would play with it, wash and groom it,
grow attached to it, and even name it, making
it a part of the family.
42. Here's where this gets difficult.
The head of the household, (to whom the lamb
was a beloved pet) didn't get to just leave the
lamb there and go home, like a person dropping
off a sick pet at the vets to be euthanized.
Or even one who comforts the pet while the vet
does it.
44. The priest would carefully instruct you in the
most humane way to conduct the sacrifice, but
you had to do it.
You would be taught how to gently squeeze off
the lamb's jugular with thumb and forefinger
until the lamb would pass out.
46. Once the lamb was unconscious, the penitent,
still holding the lamb's throat, would be
instructed on how to insert the knife, nick the
jugular and hold the lamb over the laver to
catch its blood for the sacrifice.
47. As the blood flowed, it would flow over the
penitent's hands and arms, staining him with
the sacrificial blood.
http://www.colindye.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/The-Blood-of-Jesus-and-his-Unlimited-Blessing.png
48. The lamb's innocent little heart would continue
to pump out the blood, which would continue
to stain the head of the household until it had
pumped its last and the little lamb was dead.
http://www.spirit-of-prophecy-1844.com/resources/Lamb%20on%20altar%20sacrifice.jpg?timestamp=1351543375906
49. The priest would hold up the now-dead lamb
before the Lord, read the name of the family as
it appeared on the placard around its neck, and
declare the lamb's 'sins' before the Lord. Then
the priest would shout, “It is finished!”
51. In Judea in AD 33, Latin was the language of
business however most people grew up
speaking Greek, the common language of the
empire, a holdover from the days of Alexander
the Great.
52. The Septuagint, the Greek version of theTorah,
was so translated because more Jews spoke
Greek than Hebrew.
Aramaic gradually replaced Greek and Hebrew
as the language of the Jews.
54. So, there was Latin and Greek, and finally, the
language of the Jews at the time, which was
Aramaic.
It was the language of Jesus and John the
Baptist, who spoke aWestern Aramaic
language during his public ministry.
64. His was no humane kosher sacrifice, but a
bloody, vicious, violent, painful, tortured and
shameful execution at the hands of the very
family the Lamb loved so deeply andWho asks
only for our trust in return.
66. Isaiah 53:10 ESV
10Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush Him;
God was pleased with the plan.
67. When Caiphas objected, asking the inscription
be changed to say, “This is Jesus, who claimed
to be King of the Jews,” Pilate rebuffed him,
saying, “What I have written, I have written.”
68. For that was the charge against Him for which
He was crucified - for the sins of the Jews as
their King.
For the sins of the Romans as their occupier and
for the sins of mankind as they stood by as
spectators.
And for you and for me.
71. Why is this day of crucifixion different than all
other days?
Because it is the day that we learn just how
much God loves us and how much He loves
those we come in contact with every day.
72. Jesus is their King too, and ours.
Jesus is God's Lamb for them too.
73. Are their garments spotless?
Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the Blood of the Lamb?
Are they?
77. Jesus had been hanging on a blood stained
cross, writhing in His death-agony.
It appeared like His first coming was a complete
failure – without power, without honor, and
without glory.
78. But at His Second Coming, the parousia, He will
appear in power and triumph and all glory will
belong to Him!
John declared in Revelation 1:7, “every eye will
see Him”.
79. 2Thessalonians 1:7b-10 ESV
7b when the Lord Jesus is revealed from Heaven
with His mighty angels 8 in flaming fire,
inflicting vengeance on those who do not know
God and on those who do not obey the Gospel
of our Lord Jesus.
81. 10 when He comes on that Day to be glorified in
His saints, and to be marveled at among all who
have believed, because our testimony to you
was believed.
2Thessalonians 1:7b-10 ESV
83. Matthew 24:30 ESV
30Then will appear in Heaven the sign of the
Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth
will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man
coming on the clouds of Heaven with power
and great glory.
84. We are reminded of the words in the Model
Prayer:
“Thy kingdom come,Thy will be done, on Earth
as it is in Heaven…
forThine is the kingdom and the power and the
glory, forever. Amen!”
85. Satan, of course, does not want Jesus to have
the power and the glory.
Three times, Satan tempted Jesus in the
wilderness in order to prevent Him from
attaining the power and the glory that is rightly
His.
88. In effect, Satan was saying, “The kingdom, the
power, and the glory are mine, notYours.”
And Satan was right – for the moment.
Jesus is recorded in Matthew 4:10 as answering
Satan with “You shall worship the Lord your
God, and serve Him only”.
89. With those words, Jesus set aside the
temptation to take a short-cut to power and
glory.
Satan had offered an easy path to glory, one
that did not involve the cross.
90. Jesus chose instead, the hard path, the narrow
way, the darkness, agony, and humiliation of
the cross.
In doing so, He made possible a future moment
– the very moment described here when He will
appear before the entire human race.
92. Jesus compared Himself to a criminal when He
said:
Matthew 24:42-44 ESV
42 “Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know
on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know
this, that if the master of the house had known
in what part of the night the thief was coming,
he would have stayed awake and would not
have let his house be broken into.
93. 44Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son
of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Matthew 24:42-44 ESV
94. Paul said the same thing:
1Thessalonians 5:2 ESV
2 For you yourselves are fully aware that the
Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the
night.
95. And John wrote:
Revelation 16:15 ESV
15 “Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is
the one who stays awake, keeping his garments
on, that he may not go about naked and be
seen exposed!”
96. Why does the Son of God compare Himself to a
criminal?
Because He is making a crucial point and He
doesn’t want the impact of that point to be lost.
98. Waiting certainly does not mean to sit on the
sofa, twiddling your thumbs until He comes nor
to stand on the rooftop watching the skies for
His return - we have too much work to do.
100. Jesus told us:
John 4:35 ESV
35 “Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months,
then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up
your eyes, and see that the fields are white for
harvest.”
102. Jesus is telling us that the work of the harvest is
a crisis, it’s an emergency.
We don’t have time to gaze foolishly into the
skies when the work of the harvest is so urgent!
103. We should not be fooled by the deceitfulness of
the age in which we live.
We are surrounded by seductive lies and it is all
part of the great satanic brainwashing
campaign behind the philosophy of the world.
104. If we fall for it, we will not be ready when He
comes.
The only defense against the satanic deception
that surrounds us is a continuous, step-by-step
reliance on the truth of God as illuminated for
us by the indwelling Spirit of God.
105. TheWord tells us that our job is to serve God
and others through an unceasing ministry of
love and service in the name of Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, “Occupy till I come” (Luke 19:13).
106. Romans 5:5-11 AMP
5 Such hope [in God’s promises] never
disappoints us, because God’s love has been
abundantly poured out within our hearts
through the Holy SpiritWho was given to us.
107. 6While we were still helpless [powerless to
provide for our salvation] at the right time
Christ died [as a substitute] for the ungodly.
7 Now it is an extraordinary thing for one to
willingly give his life even for an upright man,
though perhaps for a good man [one who is
noble and selfless and worthy] someone might
even dare to die.
108. 8 But God clearly shows and proves His
own love for us, by the fact that while
we were still sinners, Christ died for
us.
110. 10 For if while we were enemies we were
reconciled to God through the death of His Son,
it is much more certain, having been reconciled,
that we will be saved [from the consequences
of sin] by His life [that is, we will be saved
because Christ lives today].
111. 11 Not only that, but we also rejoice in God,
[rejoicing in His love and perfection] through
our Lord Jesus Christ, throughWhom we have
now received and enjoy our reconciliation [with
God].
Romans 5:5-11 AMP

114. The Plan of Hope & Salvation
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son,
that whoever believes in him should not perish but have
eternal life.”
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the
life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
115. Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23a ESV
23a For the wages of sin is death,
• Death in this life (the first death) is 100%.
• Even Jesus, the only one who doesn’t deserve death,
died in this life to pay the penalty for our sins.
• The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the second
death explained in Revelation 21:8.
116. Revelation 21:8 ESV
8 “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as
for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters,
and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns
with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
Romans 6:23b ESV
23b but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.
117. Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still
sinners, Christ died for us.
Revelation 21:7 ESV
7 "The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will
be his God and he will be my son.”
Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to be conquerors.
118. Romans 10:9-10 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is
Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from
the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one
believes and is justified, and with the mouth one
confesses and is saved.
Romans 10:13 ESV
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be
saved.”
