Congressional candidate Dr. James Veltmeyer had
an unlikely journey from homelessness to Chief,
Department of Family Medicine at Sharp Grossmont Hospital.
Overcoming tough challenges comes naturally to James Veltmeyer. Born in South
America, his family became homeless when his father abandoned his mother
and siblings. His mother made the heartbreaking decision to send James and his
brother to live with an aunt. After a two-year effort to obtain a visa, his aunt in El
Cajon was able to bring the two boys to live with her in San Diego County.
Given an opportunity, like so many immigrants before him, James worked hard to
make the best of the extraordinary opportunity. He attended schools in East County,
including Grossmont High School. He went on to UC San Diego where he worked
even harder and was then admitted to medical school. And then he completed his
residency through UC San Francisco system, where he became Chief, overseeing 36
doctors.
After completing his studies, James came home to San Diego, joining the staff at
Sharp Grossmont Hospital. As the Chief of the Department of Family Medicine, he
provides senior leadership to over 200 doctors. In 2012 and 2014, he was selected
by his colleagues through the San Diego County Medical Society as a “Top Medical
Doctor in San Diego.” James knows he has to meet high standards.
Family life is important to James, also. He and his wife, Laura, are raising two
children, Olivia, 5, and Landon, 3.
As a doctor, it’s a matter of course for him to work hard, make tough decisions, and
be held responsible for results. Now, James Veltmeyer is running for Congress and
he will bring the same passion for excellence and clear accountability to his work as
our representative in Washington, D.C.
2. Dr. James Veltmeyer sees firsthand how patient care suffers when
bureaucracy is injected to the medical field. He has watched middle
class opportunities become scarcer. He believes the quality of life
for struggling Americans will improve when we let Americans keep
more of their hard earned paychecks, encourage—not stifle—
entrepreneurs, get medicine out of the hands of bureaucrats, and
achieve security and peace through diplomatic and military strength.
Defense & National Security
To safeguard our nation’s security, Congress must act
decisively to correct the course taken by the Obama
Administration. It is urgent that U.S. armed forces be
modernized to meet our security commitments and
threats we face. Critical modernization actions needed
are the expansion of our naval forces, upgrades to long-
range bombers and fighter jet capabilities and increased
funding for conventional forces.
Health Care
The Affordable Care Act, Obamacare, has been disruptive,
expensive and confusing. The law incentivizes those
employers that do not provide health benefits to shift full-
time workers to part-time status to avoid the mandate and the
additional business cost.
The new Obamacare scheme is shifting health care decision- making
to unelected bureaucrats. Our health care decisions should be
made by us and our doctors, not the government. Dr.
Veltmeyer values the doctor-patient relationship and
will work to restore the strength of that bond.
James Veltmeyer on the Key Issues
Taxes, the Budget….
and too many Regulations
Small business owners know that taxes and excessive
regulation are impediments to growth of their
companies. Congress should ease the burden on
these businesses to encourage growth and more
employment. James Veltmeyer supports the No New
Taxes pledge and, as our Congressman, will fight to
rollback unnecessary regulations.
