Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

În Vechiul Testament citim istoria lui Naaman, comandantul armatei Siriei.
Naaman era foarte respectat de către oștenii lui și era cunoscut ca fiind un prieten personal al regelui.
Dacă a fi bogat și a avea o slujbă importantă ar fi fost tot ce era necesar să-i asigure fericirea, casa lui Naaman ar fi fost un loc minunat în care să trăiești. Dar, din nefericire, casa lui Naaman era un loc de întristare. Naaman avea lepră, cea mai temută boală, pentru care nu exista vindecare.
Soția lui Naaman și ceilalți membri ai familiei lui erau foarte triști știind că, zi după zi, Naaman se sfârșea încet.
Chiar și robii erau întristați pentru Naaman și soția lui, iar una dintre roabe, în special, se întreba cum ar putea să-i ajute.
Ea știa despre adevăratul și viul Dumnezeu și despre Elisei, profetul lui Dumnezeu care locuia în țara copilăriei sale.
Fetița roabă era sigură că, dacă Naaman ar fi mers la profet, ar fi putut fi vindecat de lepra lui.
Așa că într-o zi și-a făcut curaj și i-a spus stăpânei ei despre profetul care trăia în Israel și ce simțea ea că s-ar putea face în legătură cu întristarea din casa lor.
Soția lui Naaman nu auzise niciodată de Dumnezeu și totuși, în timp ce stătea și o asculta pe fetița roabă spunându-i despre lucrurile minunate pe care Dumnezeu le poate face, o nouă speranță a răsărit în inima ei.
Soția lui Naaman s-a dus să-i spună soțului această veste.
Naaman a ascultat cu atenție. El o luase roabă pe această fetiță într-una din luptele lui din Israel. De ce încerca să-l ajute?
Un Dumnezeu care putea să vindece lepra? Putea fi adevărat lucrul acesta? Era singura lui speranță.
Așa că Naaman a fost de acord cu soția sa și s-a hotărât că va merge și va încerca să-l găsească pe profet.
Dar el era un sirian care atacase poporul lui Israel. Cât de dispuși ar fi ei să ajute un dușman? Poate că regele Siriei l-ar putea ajuta.
... regele s-a asigurat el însuși că a fost pregătit un dar regal pentru oricine ar fi putut să-l vindece pe Naaman de această boală de temut.
Dar când au ajuns, s-au găsit în fața unei case foarte sărace, și aceasta l-a deranjat pe Naaman.
El era supărat și de faptul că nimeni nu era afară, ca să-l întâmpine. La urma urmei …
… el era comandantul armatei Siriei!
Doi dintre slujitorii săi s-au apropiat și au strigat ca cineva să vină și să stea de vorbă cu comandantul lor.
Dar Elisei, care era în casă, nu a ieșit la poartă, ci i-a dat slujitorului lui un mesaj pentru Naaman.
Slujitorul a ieșit afară și i-a spus lui Naaman că, dacă merge la râul Iordan și se scaldă de șapte ori, va fi vindecat complet de lepra lui.
Râul Iordan? Își bătea Elisei joc de el? De ce nu râurile Siriei, care erau mult mai frumoase decât Iordanul cel murdar și mâlos?
Nu puteau să-l insulte pe comandantul armatei Siriei în felul acesta!
Le-a poruncit slujitorilor săi să plece imediat. Dar slujitorii lui a încercat să stea de vorbă cu el.
Ei i-au spus conducătorului lor că, dacă i s-ar fi cerut un lucru greu, fără îndoială că ar fi încercat să-l facă. De ce să nu facă ceea ce-i spusese slujitorul? Naaman știa în inima lui că slujitorii săi aveau dreptate. Dacă voia ca să fie ajutat de Dumnezeu, trebuia să fie dispus să creadă și să asculte.
Așa că Naaman și slujitorii lui au mers mai departe, până la râul Iordan.
Ascultător, Naaman a intrat în apă.
Slujitorii lui priveau de pe malul râului. Ce avea să se întâmple?
Naaman s-a scufundat de șase ori în apă, dar corpul lui a rămas la fel.
Când Naaman s-a scufundat pentru a șaptea oară, slujitorii de pe mal s-au apropiat. Oare era posibil ca iubitul lor comandant să fie vindecat? Exista oare un Dumnezeu care ar putea face un așa lucru?
Și când Naaman a ieșit din apă, strigătele lui de bucurie le-au dat răspunsul: „Lepra mea! A dispărut!”
Naaman era copleșit de bucurie. În ciuda slăbiciunii credinței lui, Dumnezeu l-a vindecat!
Un grup de oameni umili s-a întors la căsuța unde locuia Elisei, cu multe daruri pe care le aduseseră.
Dar Elisei nu a vrut să primească darurile lor. Nu voia aurul lor. El dorea ca Dumnezeu să primească toată slava pentru această minune.
O minune uimitoare avusese loc. Naaman fusese vindecat de lepra lui prin credință și o simplă ascultare de voia lui Dumnezeu.
