Do you feel you’re more autonomous
now when it comes to choosing roles?
No, I just make no-brainer decisions
about what comes to me, or whatever
circumstances have locked me in a room
with someone who wants to do something.
Tracks was a no-brainer.
You’ve worked with the Coen brothers,
Steven Spielberg and Noah Baumbach,
and signed on for Martin Scorsese’s
new film. Do you have a bucket list of
directors? Totally. I’ve worked with a crazy
amount of people. It’s kind of hard to process.
There are so many others I’d like to work
with: Woody Allen, Paul Thomas Anderson,
Michael Mann… I could go on forever.
You have four movies in production.
Are you itching for a break? I’m one
of those annoying people who complains
that they’re tired, but then you compare
your problems to the rest of the world’s
and you’re like, “This is brilliant.” I like
being busy, and I don’t consider what I do
for a living a burden – I couldn’t be more
excited or lucky.
Can we expect to see you hanging
around in Girls or are you planning a
permanent shift to movies? That’s up to
Lena [Dunham, Girls’ producer/writer/star].
If Adam gets hit by another bus, that’s not
my doing.
As you suggest, Adam might become a
serial killer, so you may be the only one
left on the show. It might become Boy.
[Laughs] Yeah, Just One Guy. MEL EVANS

Your new movie, Tracks, co-starring
Mia Wasikowska, was shot in outback
Australia. What was it like working in
the desert? Well, exciting for me because
I’m from Flax, Indiana. The desert was
beautiful. I was ready for the heat and sun.
How long were you here for? Collectively,
about two months. I made the trip four times.
Four times? It’s not an easy flight from
the US to Australia. No, but it was 14 hours
of uninterrupted peace so I could catch up
on movies, drink lots of water and count how
many times I could go to the bathroom.
What was your personal best? Seven.
You play National Geographic
photojournalist Rick Smolan – did you
feel more pressure playing a character
that isn’t fictional? No, I try to approach
every character with the same amount of
pressure, trying to make them as realistic
as possible. But I learnt early on to relieve
myself of the pressure of getting an exact
interpretation – that’s almost impossible.
You’ve said you don’t like to watch
yourself on screen. Is that becoming
a bit of a problem, because you’re
missing out on some really amazing
films now? I haven’t seen most of the
things I’ve done. When we film,
I kind of remember what it’s
like. But it’s an illusion because
sometimes I’ll see the frames
of what we’re doing and that’s
not how I remembered it at all.
We’re seeing a completely
different side to your Girls
character, Adam, in Season 3.
But who knows what will
happen later in the season?
[Laughs] Yeah, he turns into a serial killer!
I read that fans would come up to you in
the street, in the early days of the show,
and call you an asshole. That must have
stopped by now, right? Yeah, it was only
for the first couple episodes and then people
were less combative. Now it’s just my relatives
who call me an asshole.
You’re also in the newly released film
Inside Llewyn Davis. How was dabbling
in music? Petrifying. I remember doing
pre-records with Justin Timberlake, Oscar
Isaac and [music producer] T-Bone Burnett
– they listen to music in a way I don’t. I think
singing is one of the most vulnerable things
you can do. Being in a room with people
of that calibre makes you very nervous.
You looked quite dapper in your Gap
campaign and being chased by girls in
US GQ. How’s rocking a stylish-actor-
heart-throb vibe going for you? I have
no concept of that; it’s weird for me.
You got married last year to actor
Joanne Tucker, so now you lead two
lives: settled at home and being chased
by girls at work. No, it’s the same.
Your wife chases you around the house?
Yeah, but with butcher knives.
