Global South- South Development Expo A presentation from Solution Forum 1 by UNEP Solution Forum 1 will present innovative Southern projects that are contributing substantial and tangible benefits to the environment as well as to economic development, decent job creation and poverty eradication at the global, regional and national levels.The forum will emphasize the crucial role that environmental considerations, when embedded in an adequate policy framework, can play in the transition to an inclusive green economy. Levan microbial polysaccharide
Levan, a homopolysaccharide which is composed of D-fructofuranosyl residues joined by β2,6 with multiple branches by β2,1 linkages. Levan is a diversely distributed component, particularly in plants, yeasts, fungi and bacteria (Jang et al., 2002). Levan produced in grasses (Dactylis glomerata, Poa secunda and Agropyron cristatum) are present as storage carbohydrates in the stem and leaf sheaths, and are degraded in the later stage of the growing season to provide plants with
carbohydrates for grain filling (Pollock and Cairns, 1991). Levan is also contained in wheat and barley (Hordeum vulgare), yeast, fungi (Aspergillus sydawi and A. versicolor), and in 1 bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Aerobacter levanicum, Erwinia herbicola, Streptococcus salivarius and Zymomonas mobilis) in trace amount (Han, 1990).
Levan has great potential as a functional biopolymer in foods, feeds, cosmetics, and the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Levan is also shown to exert excellent cellproliferating, skin moisturizing, and skin irritationalleviating
effects as a blending component in cosmetics. Levan derivatives such as sulphated, phosphated, or acetylated levans are asserted to be anti-AIDS agents. In addition, levan is used as a coating material in a drug delivery formulation moreover has a number of industrial applications such as surfactant for household use due to its excellent surface active properties, a
glycol/levan aqueous twophase system for the partitioning of proteins, etc.

The Flexi Biogas system is a flexible above-ground biogas system manufactured in Kenya that is simpler and less costly to build and operate than traditional fixed dome biogas systems. It consists of a plastic digester bag housed in a greenhouse tunnel. Organic waste placed in the bag produces biogas through anaerobic digestion, which is then piped to appliances. The Flexi Biogas system is portable, inexpensive at $410, and takes only one day to install compared to $1,000 and 21 days for fixed dome systems. It also has a shorter retention time of 15 days versus 45 days.

Turkey's National Energy Conservation Centre (NECC) has collaborated regionally to improve energy efficiency through training courses hosted in Turkey. Over the past decade, NECC has trained over 200 energy managers from over 20 neighboring countries in topics like energy auditing and management. This regional cooperation began with bilateral partnerships but expanded to involve multilateral actors. NECC's success is due to Turkey's history accumulating energy efficiency expertise since the 1970s, addressing common energy interests across countries, and ongoing capacity development efforts supported by partners like JICA.

Innovation Africa is a non-profit that has completed 65 projects across 4 countries in Africa, bringing renewable energy technologies to power schools, clinics, and pump water. They have installed solar panels and batteries to provide electricity to over 478,000 people. Their projects include powering medical clinics to increase access to healthcare, schools to allow evening study, and orphanages. They also establish solar-powered phone charging businesses in each community to generate income in a sustainable way.
