This document provides an overview of an emergency shut down (ESD) system. It outlines the objectives of understanding the ESD function, layout, and components. The ESD uses hydraulic actuators located on flow valves and surface safety valves to close quickly in an emergency. It must be used when well pressure is over 5,000 psi, H2S is present, or during high flowrate tests. The ESD panel includes hydraulic pumps, tanks, valves and pilots to activate valve closure from remote stations if pressure increases dangerously.
