2. PROCEDURE
Wash hand – To prevent cross infection
Assemble all the articles at bed side - To save time
and energy
Loosen all the adhesive tapes of old dressing but do
not expose the wound – To make the dressing less
traumatic for the patient
Wash hands , Wear mask , gown , gloves – Prevent
cross infection
Open the sterile tray - To maintain asepsis and
prevent cross infection

3. Pick up the dissecting forcep and remove loosened
dressing – Observe the condition of wound/affected
area
Fold the soiled dressing inwards and place it in the
paper bag or covered bin . Observe the colour and
amount of drainage . Discard the dissecting forcep
in the bowl antiseptic solution – To prevent
infection
Clean the wound from centre to periphery – The
wound area is cleaner than skin even if wound is
infected

4. After thorough cleaning of the wound , make it dry
with gauze piece – Moisture facilitates growth and
movement of microorganisms
Apply medication as prescribed by physician –
Antiseptics help in retarding the growth of
microorganisms
Cover the wound with the sterile gauze piece and
then with cotton pads – Cotton placed directly on
wound may stick to it when discharges dries up
Reinforce the dressing on dependent part – It
prevents oozing of the drainage

5. Dip the artery forceps and dissecting forcep in
antiseptic solution – To prevent spread of cross
infection
Remove gloves and secure the dressing with
bandage - For support
Make patient comfortable – To relieve anxiety
Replace all the articles – Can have easy access
Wash hands – To prevent cross infection
Do the recording and reporting – Maintain the legal
records of procedure
