Player 'X' of the United Arab Emirates, broad-shouldered, standing with a dense mop of
black hair tucked under a broad-brimmed floppy hat,no helmet, taking guard to face 'Y' – on
his first ball in his maiden World Cup. It was a sight that angered the South Africans, already
bothered by the 40-degree heat in Rawalpindi, who wanted to wrap up the match as soon as
possible. Was it a slight to the fast man’s ego to watch an Associate player showing no
respect by walking out helmetless? The next ball was a perfect on-the-money bouncer: he
could not really duck, he sort of stood up and just flinched. It really hit flush on his head. The
ball almost came back to 'Y', that’s how hard it hit him. His hat fell off. At the end he told he
was fine. Identify 'X' and 'Y'.

I was just watching one of my favourite matches in Cricket World Cup history, the semi finals
between Pakistan and New Zealand in the 1992 world cup.
It was close. Inzamam burst onto the scene. Pakistan won.
Which injury-related team-shuffle in the second half of the match is sometimes considered a prime
reason for the loss?

hamstring injury while batting in the NZ innings,
and did not take the field in the Pakistan Innings.
So John Wright captained the team in his stead.

“Ground Rules - a celebration of Test cricket” is a book that chronicles the history of Test
Cricket by using cricket grounds as a reference. Sourav Ganguly was asked to chronicle the
history of Eden Gardens.
In his article, Ganguly mentions person X to be the greatest player to have played at the Eden
Gardens, though this guy had only played one exhibition match there, in 1970.
Who is X?

So this is the list of tests that Arun Lal, the ex-commentator,
andcoach of Bengal’s runner-up Ranji team has played.
He came into the side in 1982 (while playing for Delhi), was
discarded in early 1983, and then, after a stalwart many seasons at
the Ranji trophy for Bengal (and many tests cooling his heels in the
pavilion as the backup opener), got to have a bit of a run after
Gavaskar retired, starting in the series against West Indies
starting Nov 1987.
However, in the interim, in Feb 1987, he did get to play a test in
1987, due to extraordinary circumstances. What were the
circumstances?

32. ● In the 1984-85 series against England, Sunil Gavaskar infamously dropped Kapil Dev for a test and
that was the only test Kapil Dev missed in his career. That happened to be at Eden Gardens. Kapil
was much loved in Kolkata, and the stadium booed Gavaskar in 1984-85.
● Gavaskar vowed that he would never play at Eden Gardens again in his career.
● Come Feb 1987 in the series against Pakistan (his last), he stood true to his words, and did not play
the Test against Pakistan, so Arun Lal got a chance to open.
