2. KAS
 Is the civil service of kerala recruited by KPSC
through KAS exam. Like IAS , KAS is also very
dynamic and powerful post.
Objective of KAS:-
 is to indulge young and dynamic candidates to be
part of Kerala administration and decision making
so as to bring quality and efficiency to the servicce.
 they will be efficient substitute for IAS officers.

3. Why KAS?
Direct recruitment
8 years of service –promotion to IAS
The number of aspirants who promotes to IAS from Deputy
Collector(current highest cadre) in Kerala is very less.
This vacancy cannot be filled by all India quota also. Due to
these reasons, almost 70 cadres are vacant in Kerala.
This situation forces the civil servants in the service to
handle more than one department and creates some
inefficiency in the department.

4.  common platform:-
It will bring gazetted employees in Kerala Secretariat and
outside under a common platform and will channel a
stream of youngsters who are capable of changing the
preface of Kerala government.
 It can bring talented and committed officers in
Government Service and prepare them for senior level
administrative and managerial positions in public service.
 Hardly 10 to 15 IAS aspirants of the state were getting
qualified in the all India Civil Services examination.

5.  KAS can bring more aspirants to administrative
services and offer them the dream job .
 There are likely to be 300 vacancies for KAS post in a
year.

6. Why KAS is better than Deputy Collector post?
 KAS will be more powerful post than deputy collector
and is going to be the highest cadre one can be
recruited in Kerala through Kerala PSC .
 KAS will be having a better chance and less time for
conferring IAS compared to deputy collector.
 KAS will become a fast feeder category to IAS through
appointment by promotion

9. Conferred IAS Present position:-
 Presently, there are two ways, a Kerala state
government employee could be conferred IAS. Either
he/she should be recruited after passing Deputy
Collector examination or the person should be
working with the revenue department in a clerical post
for many years.

10. ELIGIBILITY:- Any degree
Age Limit :
 For Direct Recruitment of KAS Officer (Junior Time Scale).21-35
 Age relaxation for OBC 3 years, SC/ST 5 years.
 For Direct Recruitment From permanent employees. Stream 2 - Must not
have completed 40 years of age on 1st January of the year in which
application of appointment is invited.
 By transfer appointment from candidates holding 1st gazetted posts in
Government departments and equivalent posts in common
categories must not have completed 50 years of age limit as on 1st
January of the year in which application for appointment is invited.

Three papers- Descriptive type

Paper-3 Kerala history, renaissance
& Culture- Marks:150

13. PERSONALITY TEST/ INTERVIEW ( 50 Marks)
To assess the personal suitability of the candidate
for a career in Public Service. This would be led by
a Board of competent and unbiased observers.
Here one will be asked /judged /assessed….
Questions on matters of general interest .
Mental calibre of the candidate .
Intellectual qualities and social traits and his
interest in current affairs.
Mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation
and clear logical exposition, ability of
socialisation, leadership and moral integrity.

18. Pay scale:-
The highest scale of pay available for the post under a
department they are getting selected
Exam will be expected within 3 to 4 months of the
announcement of notification.

19. Suggested books & magazines:-
• Kerala history written by Sreedhara Menon is a recommended
one.
 NCERT Geography textbooks for Class 11 and 12.
 Physical & Human Geography by GC Leong.
(There is no standard textbook available to refer Kerala
Geography )
 To study the dynamic part like Kerala current affairs, you are
recommended to follow the newspapers on a daily basis.
 Give importance to topics like Kerala Government programs &
schemes
 Kerala economy, ICT, agriculture, environmental initiatives etc.
 take notes regularly.
 In the website of most of the newspapers, there are individual
tabs especially for news related to agriculture, finance, special
columns, environment, health etc.

20. Malayalam language skills
 Most probably Proficiency in Malayalam is going to be
tested in both objective type preliminary examination and
essay type main examination. The main paper in
Malayalam will be similar as that of the pattern of IAS.
