PROJECT OVERVIEW
The final project of the semester will build on prior typographic instruction/skill sets and
culminate in a multifaceted portfolio piece worthy of the attention of the The Young
Ones TDC (and the reviewers at AIGA Minnesota Portfolio One-on-One). This 68th An-
nual Type Director’s Club competition early deadline is December 17th. You will prepare
a complete entry to the competition for grading. Actual entry is optional.
Content, media choice, and scope are determined by you in consultation with the class
during the presentations on November 30th. The only requirement is that the project re-
main predominately typographic and fit within one of the many 68th Annual Type Direc-
tor’s Club competition categories.

1. Three 15” x 20” mounted boards
2. Process PDF/Case study
3. 300ppi portfolio JPEG images (hero shots) sized to 7 inches along the longest side
4. Web portfolio presence

In a PDF presentation, show examples of what you plan to strive for, select a category,
and propose deliverables and a first round of ideas. Limit the presentation to five slides
summarizing your process to date, but continue your process PDF as usual.
December 2nd
Commit to a project and convey your creative plans in a pdf that includes inspiration,
deliverables, and a second round of ideas. Limit the presentation to five slides summa-
rizing your process to date, but continue your process PDF as usual.
December 7th
Completed projects, mock-up trials, and TDC entry forms ready for tweaking and pro-
duction.
December 9th
Completed projects, mock-up trials, and TDC entry forms ready for tweaking and pro-
duction. Last chance for input before turning in for grading.
December 14th
Final Typographic Triumph critique: Everything ready to turn in, but we’ll only project
“hero shots.” Deliverables? Web presence? Reel?

CHOICE OF MEDIA
My choice of media will be a mix of a planner and a journal that helps student organize
their daily life activities and proactively manage their mental health wellness.
As a student, my life is often busy with many responsibilities ranging from assignments,
jobs, and personal life. Journaling has always been my go-to when it comes to bringing
balance and organization to my life. Not only has it become a grounding practice for
me, but it has also become one of my hobbies. I love collecting bullet journals and sta-
tionary items. It’s the best when I’ve finished a whole journal because I can look back on
it and review my progress with my own personal growth.
The planner journal will include content such as:
- monthly calendar spread
- weekly spread
- weekly check in (for mental health wellness)
- mood track, goals, quotes and/or more

I’d like to create bars that people can shade in to rate
how well they are doing emotionally, mentally, spiritually,
and physically. This is for the mental health aspect.

UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT?
CHALLENGES
Lots of planners are basic, there will be many planners created, so how can I make this
planner journal unique and different from the typical planners?
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
• Adding a mental health aspect
• Target of Audience: Students
- Adding a class schedule for students
- Time schedule
• Incorporate productivity concept techniques and design accordingly to them
- Reduce, prioritize, plan, exceute
- Diminishing Returns: managing what’s more important or less important to reduce time
and labor
- Eisenhower’s Matrix concept: figuring out deadlines and priority based on easy, hard,
urgent and not urgent quadrant

I liked both concepts, however I thought the second idea was a better fit as it resembled my initial sketches and
the friendly theme I am approaching with my planner.
I’m still not happy with the result though because it doesn’t feel personal to me. So I will have to experiment a bit

Cover Drafts
Hear me out, although these look like kid drawings, it added personality, personal taste, and a friendly touch to it,
which is what I honestly wanted to go for this mindful planner. This character is named Buddy, Buddy is just like
you, someone with their mind full. This was also very similar to my initial sketches, it’s light hearted. I also scanned
in my drawings, so these are hand drawn.

Monthly Illustrations
I created 12 simple illustrations of the character Buddy. I used simple geometric shapes and played with fun colors.
Each month represents a theme that goes along with it.
