 Air quality forecast systems
 Arve Valley Project
 Development of an air quality
forecast system over the Arve
Valley for the industrial group
BONTAZ CENTRE
Sustainable cities
Context
• Particles pollution peaks in winter and especially this last
december (traffic, wood heating sources)
Objectives
• Bring information to the population in the Arve Valley in
complement to the information published by the air quality
network ATMO AURA…
• Improve the knowledge (meteorological process, wood heating
emissions)
3 complementary partners
• The Bontaz group
• ATMO AURA
• ARIA
The Arve Valley project
12ARIA Technologies
Our expertise…
Similar system developped by ARIANET in Aosta Valley
• Performance tests for the Kalman Filter implementation for year 2016
(ARIANET) over Aosta Valley
The Arve modeling chain
FARM Configuration : 2 nesting levels
Domains :
• Father Domain (“Grand Domaine”) : 1 km horizontal resolution (53 x 36 cells)
• Son Domain (“Domaine d’intérêt”) : 100 m horizontal resolution (201 x 151 cells)
• 16 vertical levels from between 20 and 10 000 m
Gas and aerosol processes
• Full chemistry for Father domain
• Reduced one for Son domain
Anthropogenic emission provided by ATMO AURA
Boundary conditions: Provided by CHIMERE 3km operated by ATMO AURA
Meteorology: Provided by WRF operated by ATMO AURA
Statistical correction : Kalman filter + Spatial interpolation (landuse )

Improvements and tests to be carried out
• Adjustment of the dynamical modelling (representativeness of the
stability of air masses in the valley)
• Adjustment of wood heating emissions data . High source of uncertainty
in term of total mass emitted as well as temporal variation of the
heating activity
Objectives : improve the modeling results before the application of the
statistical correction
and understand the main processes at the origin of an air pollution episode
