1. Defensive Roles Around The Fringe
A/B- Set first on both sides. A and B do not C/1/2/3 - Push from C out if you are late into
reshuffle once they are set. the line. Move faster guys out where possible.
A C (Decision maker)
• Set line • Communicate role
• Communicate role
• Call spread if it’s on
• Call “up”
• Defend inside runner off 9 • Defend first runner (Could be a forward
• Defend tight pick and go runner, 10 (unless he is wide and flat) or a
N.B. Do not drift with line forward/winger trailing 10 on the inside)
B 1/2/3
• Communicate role (let 9 know you have • Communicate role
him)
• Defend 9 • Defend channel/drift depending on what
• Defend tight forward runners if pop comes the attack does
from the base (Defend channel)
• Assist A defending pick and go

B A A B C 1 2 3
Teams are unlikely to get four forward runners running into all potential gap around the
fringe, drawing A,B,C, 1 and 2, so once we indentify numbers the defender who is not being
forced to bite makes the out call(Spread). This will more often then not be C but against
better team it could be 1,2 or 3.
3. Other Points
• Communicate role- Communicate not only to let the players outside you know what they are
doing but to also clue yourself into your role.
• Understand and trust the structure – Everyone must 100% understand the defensive
structure and trust that if they fulfill their role the attack can not go through us. If they beat
us they beat us on the outside. Any confusion ask.
