>THIS IS THE WAY >THIS IS Product Brief Nortel Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform Metropolitan networks present a more challenging
planning picture than ever before. It’s a whole new game trying to determine where and when — and with what service mix —your most
profitable business will appear. In one location, you may need to add-drop DS3s, EC-1s, DS1s, Ethernet, hub OC-3/OC-12/OC-48 optical rings,
provide storage private lines, stretch the capacity of existing fiber and serve IP protocols. What course do you take? How do you build
networks for unpredictable growth while ensuring an optimized utilization of bandwidth and the existing assets? Nortel has the answer, with
the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform optical transport solutions for central office, remote office and enterprise customer premises
environments. From the proven optical family of connectivity and transport products, Nortel offers the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice
Platform as a part of its next-generation SONET portfolio that enables the evolution and enhancement of existing metro networks and
ultimately sets a new economic benchmark for network efficiency while increasing broadband service potential. Nortel’s next-generation
SONET portfolio delivers significant cost reduction in capital and operational expenditures, provides optimal utilization of existing assets,
enhances service delivery, enables faster service deployment and provides effective bandwidth utilization. This multi-rate, multiservice Dense
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) next-generation SONET platform offers 60 Gbps of capable switch capacity in a compact,
economical package — ideally suited for the demands of metropolitan fiber-optic networks, including newgeneration Optical Ethernet
services and storage connectivity services. _x000C_Optical Ethernet unlocks new capabilities by allowing customers to optimize their
network through new types of services. A variety of different service provider and enterprise customers can take advantage of vast amounts
of Wide Area Network (WAN) bandwidth, offering converged services and streamlined operations, while still keeping it in LAN-related
formats and protocols. It is your answer for large enterprise applications and central office hubs that terminate mixed rates and services.
Storage connectivity services (storage private lines and distance extension over SONET) enabled by Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) will
allow service providers to create new revenue streams while leveraging existing infrastructure. Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) will maximize
bandwidth utilization and support sub-rate capabilities, both essential to the extension of storage services to regional and smaller sites. With
additional, built-in functionality such as compression, flow control and buffer-tobuffer credit (BBC), service providers and enterprises can
now cost-effectively extend the reach of Fibre Channel and FICON services to thousands of Km while minimizing the impact on
latencysensitive applications. With its enhanced capabilities which guarantee zero data loss, sustained throughput, data compression, low
latency and robust security, the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform improves the price/performance of storage extension for low
bandwidth or WAN distance applications. With eight service slots in a single shelf and support for TDM (Time Division Multiplexing), Storage
and Ethernet services, the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform gives you the power of choice. You can deploy low-cost, startup
configurations today and then expand whenever the need arises without stacking multiple shelves. There is no need to overprovision today
for hard-to-predict future requirements. In summary, Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform is your high capacity, forecast-tolerant
transport solution — for any customer that needs to rapidly turn up a diverse mix of high quality, survivable voice and data services, without
interrupting existing services. Easy to order, easy to install, easy to use. The answer for the ever-changing demands of diversified
metropolitan markets. One integrated shelf ... - Multiple rates Storage Data Voice - Multiple services - Multiple topologies - DS1 to OC-192 -

Metro 3100 2 OC-48 _x000C_What makes the Optical Metro 3500 exceptional? Service flexibility Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform is
configured with universal expansion slots for adding a custom mix of DS1, DS3, DS3/VT Transmux, EC-1/ STS-1, storage (Fibre Channel and
FICON), Ethernet (10/100 Base-T, 100 Base-FX and 1000 Base-SX/LX), OC-3, OC-12, OC-48 and interface modules such as the DS1 Service
Module (DSM) — as well as a family of Ethernet Service Modules. Highly flexible service interface slots support diverse service mixes without
complex engineering rules.
The Optical Packet Edge system enables a new class of flexible data services, including Transparent LAN Services (TLS). TLS allows customers
the means of extending LANs across the metro, using well understood and secure VLAN technology. With Resilient Packet Ring technology,
orders of magnitude increase in bandwidth is achieved, while requiring no changes in the existing enterprise network topology. Optical
Ethernet is simple to implement and its flexibility and value are quickly recognized by customers. For high-capacity services, the Optical Metro
3500 Multiservice Platform includes distributed service modules that free up shelf slots while providing the highest density in the market for
terminating DS1s and Ethernet ports without stacking multiple shelves, (using the DS1 modules [DSMs] where each DSM can add/drop up to
84 protected DS1s, up to 12 DSMs [a total of 1008 protected DS1s] can be connected to a single Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform and
managed as one network element). There’s no need to co-locate an OC-3 or OC-12 network element to provide DS1 services on an OC-192
system. The combined functionality of multiple network elements in the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform frees floor space for other
revenue services. The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform is scalable from OC-3 to OC-192, offering 64 wavelengths of integrated
DWDM capability, with a wide variety of services such as TDM (DS1, DS3, EC-1, OC-3, OC-12 and OC-48) data services — Ethernet (10/100
Base-T, 100Base-FX and Gigabit Ethernet) and storage (Fibre Channel and FICON). Bandwidth management Optical Metro 3500 bandwidth
management capabilities include time slot assignment (TSA), time slot interchange (TSI), hairpinning, broadcast and drop and continue. This
bandwidth management capability is available at VT-1.5, STS-1, STS-3c, STS-12c and STS-48c levels — and achieved with a fully non-blocking
switching matrix. The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform has an integrated, multi-bit rate Test Access capability that enables service
providers to remotely test and monitor customers’ service while providing quick and reliable confirmation of service performance, as well as
increased speed of fault sectionalization. With the integrated Test Access capability, service providers can enhance customers’ SLAs, reduce
service recovery turnaround and achieve cost savings through the elimination of truck rolls. The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform’s
fully non-blocking switch matrix combined with integrated multi-bit rate Test Access capability, Transmux functionality (M13) and optical
loopbacks make it the solu- tion of choice for digital/optical crossconnect applications in Tier 2/3 central offices (COs). Security The Optical
Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform provides customers with a complete secure networking solution safe from intruders and hacking tools. Its
leading-edge security features enable customers to set an access list for each network element, so customers can ensure that no external
source can access their network even though they share an optical ring with other parties. The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform
enables centralized user access management through Remote Access Dial-In User authentication Service (RADIUS) servers as well as the
challenge/response protection mechanism which addresses many security issues associated with sending authentication information over
unsecured links. Networking versatility The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform supports a range of linear, optical hubbing,
unidirectional path switched ring (UPSR) and bi-directional line switched ring (full VT-1.5 BLSR) topologies from one platform. The system
interworks with standardscompliant equipment with OC-3, OC-12, OC-48 or OC-192 interfaces — for Nortel and other vendor equipment.
From the Nortel portfolio, this equipment includes the complete Optical Metro 3000 series (3100, 3400 and 3500 models), Nortel S/DMS
TransportNode* OC-12 TBM (Transport Bandwidth Manager), S/DMS TransportNode OC-48, OC-192 systems, Optical Metro 5000 series,
Passport* 8600, BayStack* BPS, Baystack 450 and Optical Connect DX. 3 _x000C_Compact packaging A fully-equipped Optical Metro 3500
shelf measures 17.5" tall, 11.25" deep and 17.2" wide (20.3" wide with cover). To simplify installation and conserve floor space, up to four
Optical Metro 3500 shelves with air deflectors may be installed in a single 19" or 23" wide, 7' frame. This means a single bay could support up
to 192 DS3s, 64 OC-3/OC-12s or 32 Gigabit Ethernets, with DWDM on a single pair of fibers. Operations and power interfaces are easily
accessible on the left side of the shelf and service interfaces are accessed from either the front or rear of the unit. Environmentally hardened
packaging enables the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform to be installed in outside plant cabinets, rack-mounted in huts or controlled
environment vaults or wall-mounted in a sleek cabinet at the customer premises. These unique packaging options and architectural
advantages significantly reduce capital investment and lower the operational
expense of building and maintaining a metropolitan optical network. Rugged and reliable architecture Built to industry standards, the Optical
Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform operates seamlessly in multi-vendor environments. True to the S/DMS TransportNode standard from which
it evolved, this reliable box delivers the premium 99.999 percent uptime your customers expect for mission-critical applications. Fast service

  • 7. >THIS IS THE WAY >THIS IS Product Brief Nortel Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform Metropolitan networks present a more challenging planning picture than ever before. It’s a whole new game trying to determine where and when — and with what service mix —your most profitable business will appear. In one location, you may need to add-drop DS3s, EC-1s, DS1s, Ethernet, hub OC-3/OC-12/OC-48 optical rings, provide storage private lines, stretch the capacity of existing fiber and serve IP protocols. What course do you take? How do you build networks for unpredictable growth while ensuring an optimized utilization of bandwidth and the existing assets? Nortel has the answer, with the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform optical transport solutions for central office, remote office and enterprise customer premises environments. From the proven optical family of connectivity and transport products, Nortel offers the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform as a part of its next-generation SONET portfolio that enables the evolution and enhancement of existing metro networks and ultimately sets a new economic benchmark for network efficiency while increasing broadband service potential. Nortel’s next-generation SONET portfolio delivers significant cost reduction in capital and operational expenditures, provides optimal utilization of existing assets, enhances service delivery, enables faster service deployment and provides effective bandwidth utilization. This multi-rate, multiservice Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) next-generation SONET platform offers 60 Gbps of capable switch capacity in a compact, economical package — ideally suited for the demands of metropolitan fiber-optic networks, including newgeneration Optical Ethernet services and storage connectivity services. _x000C_Optical Ethernet unlocks new capabilities by allowing customers to optimize their network through new types of services. A variety of different service provider and enterprise customers can take advantage of vast amounts of Wide Area Network (WAN) bandwidth, offering converged services and streamlined operations, while still keeping it in LAN-related formats and protocols. It is your answer for large enterprise applications and central office hubs that terminate mixed rates and services. Storage connectivity services (storage private lines and distance extension over SONET) enabled by Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) will allow service providers to create new revenue streams while leveraging existing infrastructure. Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) will maximize bandwidth utilization and support sub-rate capabilities, both essential to the extension of storage services to regional and smaller sites. With additional, built-in functionality such as compression, flow control and buffer-tobuffer credit (BBC), service providers and enterprises can now cost-effectively extend the reach of Fibre Channel and FICON services to thousands of Km while minimizing the impact on latencysensitive applications. With its enhanced capabilities which guarantee zero data loss, sustained throughput, data compression, low latency and robust security, the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform improves the price/performance of storage extension for low bandwidth or WAN distance applications. With eight service slots in a single shelf and support for TDM (Time Division Multiplexing), Storage and Ethernet services, the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform gives you the power of choice. You can deploy low-cost, startup configurations today and then expand whenever the need arises without stacking multiple shelves. There is no need to overprovision today for hard-to-predict future requirements. In summary, Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform is your high capacity, forecast-tolerant transport solution — for any customer that needs to rapidly turn up a diverse mix of high quality, survivable voice and data services, without interrupting existing services. Easy to order, easy to install, easy to use. The answer for the ever-changing demands of diversified metropolitan markets. One integrated shelf ... - Multiple rates Storage Data Voice - Multiple services - Multiple topologies - DS1 to OC-192 - OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, OC-192 Optical Metro 3100 - 10/100/1000 Mbps Optical Metro 3500 Ethernet OC-12/OC-48/OC-192 - Fibre Channel and Optical Metro 3500 FICON with data compression, bufferOC-12 to-buffer credit and flow control OC-3 Optical Metro 3500 OC-48 Optical Metro 3500 Optical Metro 3400 OC-12 Scalable to OC-192 for a true 10-Gbps next-generation SONET platform. Optical Metro 3400 Optical Metro 3100 2 OC-48 _x000C_What makes the Optical Metro 3500 exceptional? Service flexibility Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform is configured with universal expansion slots for adding a custom mix of DS1, DS3, DS3/VT Transmux, EC-1/ STS-1, storage (Fibre Channel and FICON), Ethernet (10/100 Base-T, 100 Base-FX and 1000 Base-SX/LX), OC-3, OC-12, OC-48 and interface modules such as the DS1 Service Module (DSM) — as well as a family of Ethernet Service Modules. Highly flexible service interface slots support diverse service mixes without complex engineering rules.
  • 8. The Optical Packet Edge system enables a new class of flexible data services, including Transparent LAN Services (TLS). TLS allows customers the means of extending LANs across the metro, using well understood and secure VLAN technology. With Resilient Packet Ring technology, orders of magnitude increase in bandwidth is achieved, while requiring no changes in the existing enterprise network topology. Optical Ethernet is simple to implement and its flexibility and value are quickly recognized by customers. For high-capacity services, the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform includes distributed service modules that free up shelf slots while providing the highest density in the market for terminating DS1s and Ethernet ports without stacking multiple shelves, (using the DS1 modules [DSMs] where each DSM can add/drop up to 84 protected DS1s, up to 12 DSMs [a total of 1008 protected DS1s] can be connected to a single Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform and managed as one network element). There’s no need to co-locate an OC-3 or OC-12 network element to provide DS1 services on an OC-192 system. The combined functionality of multiple network elements in the Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform frees floor space for other revenue services. The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform is scalable from OC-3 to OC-192, offering 64 wavelengths of integrated DWDM capability, with a wide variety of services such as TDM (DS1, DS3, EC-1, OC-3, OC-12 and OC-48) data services — Ethernet (10/100 Base-T, 100Base-FX and Gigabit Ethernet) and storage (Fibre Channel and FICON). Bandwidth management Optical Metro 3500 bandwidth management capabilities include time slot assignment (TSA), time slot interchange (TSI), hairpinning, broadcast and drop and continue. This bandwidth management capability is available at VT-1.5, STS-1, STS-3c, STS-12c and STS-48c levels — and achieved with a fully non-blocking switching matrix. The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform has an integrated, multi-bit rate Test Access capability that enables service providers to remotely test and monitor customers’ service while providing quick and reliable confirmation of service performance, as well as increased speed of fault sectionalization. With the integrated Test Access capability, service providers can enhance customers’ SLAs, reduce service recovery turnaround and achieve cost savings through the elimination of truck rolls. The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform’s fully non-blocking switch matrix combined with integrated multi-bit rate Test Access capability, Transmux functionality (M13) and optical loopbacks make it the solu- tion of choice for digital/optical crossconnect applications in Tier 2/3 central offices (COs). Security The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform provides customers with a complete secure networking solution safe from intruders and hacking tools. Its leading-edge security features enable customers to set an access list for each network element, so customers can ensure that no external source can access their network even though they share an optical ring with other parties. The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform enables centralized user access management through Remote Access Dial-In User authentication Service (RADIUS) servers as well as the challenge/response protection mechanism which addresses many security issues associated with sending authentication information over unsecured links. Networking versatility The Optical Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform supports a range of linear, optical hubbing, unidirectional path switched ring (UPSR) and bi-directional line switched ring (full VT-1.5 BLSR) topologies from one platform. The system interworks with standardscompliant equipment with OC-3, OC-12, OC-48 or OC-192 interfaces — for Nortel and other vendor equipment. From the Nortel portfolio, this equipment includes the complete Optical Metro 3000 series (3100, 3400 and 3500 models), Nortel S/DMS TransportNode* OC-12 TBM (Transport Bandwidth Manager), S/DMS TransportNode OC-48, OC-192 systems, Optical Metro 5000 series, Passport* 8600, BayStack* BPS, Baystack 450 and Optical Connect DX. 3 _x000C_Compact packaging A fully-equipped Optical Metro 3500 shelf measures 17.5" tall, 11.25" deep and 17.2" wide (20.3" wide with cover). To simplify installation and conserve floor space, up to four Optical Metro 3500 shelves with air deflectors may be installed in a single 19" or 23" wide, 7' frame. This means a single bay could support up to 192 DS3s, 64 OC-3/OC-12s or 32 Gigabit Ethernets, with DWDM on a single pair of fibers. Operations and power interfaces are easily accessible on the left side of the shelf and service interfaces are accessed from either the front or rear of the unit.
