Heat pushes mall footfall by over 20%

GURGAON: With the temperatures soaring high, youngsters in Gurgaon have made air conditioned malls and eating
joints their preferred destinations for chilling out with friends. And this has led to increase in footfall by over 20% as
compared to previous months.
Contrary to common belief that people prefer to stay inside to avoid the heat wave, the young and restless crowd in the
city spend their free time in malls and restaurants to beat the heat.
The mall officials in the city claim that the number of visitors, most of them being window shoppers, has gone up with
the temperature. They spent almost entire noon-to-afternoon stretch, which is worst time to stay out, in the air
conditioned malls.
Deputy Manager, MGF Metropolitan, Latesh told TOI there is 20-30% extra footfall in summers. We have a lot of people
mostly youngsters in the mall in the months of June and July as compared to other months. Also many families come
over for lunch, as most people prefer sitting in the air-conditioned restaurants rather than spending time out in the sun,
he said. He also said that movie shows in the afternoon which are comparatively less preferred are going houseful and it
is heat wave which is pulling people into theatres.
Bhawna Shukla, an MBA aspirant, said malls are best place to meet friends during summers. "Normally parents do allow
us to go out in summers therefore they fix meeting points at cafes and malls or catch a movie in multiplexes," she added.
Abhinav Sethi, another college student said the power-cuts during the day are also reason behind people going out and
taking shelter in malls. "Instead of wasting time at home and waiting for power restoration, I go out almost every
afternoon to meet friends, we spent time at book stores or cafe till evening," he added.
At the same time, the prominent restaurants in the city are almost packed in the afternoons during lunch hour with
many families queuing up to get a place. Meanwhile, the crowd in malls is not adding to sales as most of the visitors are
window shoppers.
Meanwhile, head of Sahara Mall JK Gupta said summer months are low on business and are treated as dry period by the
showroom owners and shopkeepers. "If we compare footfall and actual sales during these summer months, there is vast
gap therefore crowd in malls during this period are not customers," he added.
