Sanskrit is an ancient language that originated in India over 3,000 years ago. It developed out of Old Indo-Aryan dialects starting around 1500 BCE and became a classical language of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Indian arts and sciences. Sanskrit has a rich literary heritage and was the dominant language of ancient and medieval India.
