Circulator recommendation

1. Here is my email exchange with DDOT when I proposed a Circulator route
connecting the Glover Park and Cathedral neighborhoods with the Woodley Park
Metro, starting with DDOT’s response:

the public comments from DDOT’s recent outreach on the update of the Circulator Transit
Development Plan.
While DDOT realizes that there is some lack of connectivity from western Glover Park going
north and northwest, we know that Wisconsin Ave. has a high level of bus service seven days a
week. Wisconsin Ave. has a weekday limited-stop route and is part of WMATA and the
District’s Priority Corridor Network. In addition, the 96 route connects Wisconsin Avenue from
Tenleytown to the National Cathedral with Woodley Park and the U Street corridor. WMATA is
planning to introduce a new 98 route to replace the western end of the 96 route (Tenleytown
to U Street corridor) to improve schedule adherence on the route. You should also know that a
number of years ago additional 90s routes continued west beyond the Duke Ellington Bridge
turnback along the 96 route but were discontinued due to low patronage.
To shorten your wait for buses I would encourage you to use Next Bus, WMATA’s real time bus
arrival service.

Dear Mr. Strauss and Ms Torruellas:
May I propose a new Circulator route, one that goes between the National Cathedral and
Woodley Park Metro via Glover Park, as sketched in the attached two-page PDF.
As a resident here, I find that there is a "transit desert" encompassing the National Cathedral and
Glover Park neighborhoods. These areas have no practical connection to the Metro and are
poorly or not served at all by buses. Countless times I've walked between the Woodley Park
Metro and 34th Street to find lost tourists trying to find their way to the Cathedral, not realizing
they still have a long way to go on foot. Also, these neighborhoods have the density and

2. demographic that would greatly benefit from a practical connection to the Metro and greater
cross-city connectivity.
I propose that either a new Circulator route gets added connecting the National Cathedral and
Calvert & Wisconsin to the Woodley Park Metro, or that the Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan
route gets extended to National Cathedral/Glover Park.
This cross-city connection would complement the existing D2 WMATA line by adding faster
and more frequent service to the Metro. While the D2 provides a cross-city connection, the
amount of time it takes to get from Glover Park to Dupont Circle via all the Georgetown twists
and turns makes it unworthy of calling it a "Metro connector".
