Sara first fell ill on
November 24, 2010
She had just run her first
half marathon.

In the fall of her junior year,
Sara was diagnosed with ME
also known as
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

The term Myalgic
Encephalomyelitis means:
Myalgic—muscle pain
myo- = muscle
algia = pain
Encephalomyelitis—
encephala- = brain inflammation of the
myel = spinal cord spinal chord and
itis = inflammation
brain stem

6. MyalgicEncephalomyelitis
ME = muscle pain due to inflammation of the spinal
chord & brain stem
There is no true diagnostic test for ME.
Instead, patients are diagnosed with the
many symptoms of the disease.
There are sixty four distinct symptoms of ME
POTS is a symptom of ME and a major reason
that Sara is confined to a wheel chair.

Postural Orthostatic Tachychardia Syndrome
It causes extreme and chronic fatigue
Because of this, Sara can’t stand for more
than 20 consecutive minutes or walk
further than 20 feet without passing out.
