This presentation is for the group research project conducted by Dana Statton, Steven Buras, Zach Morrison, and Sarah Durr for LIS 7013. The presentation includes an overview of the information technology CONTENTdm, its specific application within the Louisiana Digital Libraries, and its strengths and weaknesses as determined from surveys and a literature review.

2. What is CONTENTdm?
•Operated by the OCLC since 2006
•Easy-to-use and flexible digital collection management system
(OCLC, “CONTENTdm Overview,” 2014)
•Focused on two distinct tasks: (1) collection building and (2) end-user
experience (OCLC, “CONTENTdm Features,” 2014)
•Used by the LOUISiana Digital Libraries (LDL) for their digital
collections (OCLC, “CONTENTdm Overview,” 2014)
3. CONTENTdm as an Information System
Contains both inputs and outputs
Open system
Logical (conceptual) system description:
Focuses on system’s function and purpose without regard to
implementation (Jin, Slide 21)
Physical (technical) system description:
Focuses on how the system will be designed and implemented
(Jin, Slide 21)
4. Features of CONTENTdm
Controlled Vocabulary
Multiple thesauri are provided through OCLC
Can accommodate collections containing various mediums of
information:
For example: books, newspapers, postcards, film, audio
recordings, prints, photographs, and scrapbooks (OCLC, “FAQ,”
2014)
Modeled after an Internet search engine (OCLC, “FAQ,” 2014)
5. Operational Components
Hardware
Scanner or digital camera
Server or hard drive with
enough storage space
Computer
Software
CONTENTdm Project Client
software
Adobe Photoshop or other
imaging software with editing
capabilities
Adobe Acrobat for editing
PDFs
6. Specific Applications
LDL is an online library documenting Louisiana culture and
history
Mission Statement: “To make unique historical treasures from the
Louisiana institution’s archives, libraries, museums, and other
respositories in the state electronically accessible to Louisiana
residents and to students, researchers, and the general public in
other states and countries” (LDL Advisory Committee, 2012, p. 4).
Twenty-two institutions have contributed over 144,000 items to
the collection to date
7. The Survey
Back-End Users:
Survey was sent out to
22 professionals
directly working with
CONTENTdm
14 people (or 64%) of
the 22 completed the
survey
Asked 15 questions
Front-End Users:
Survey sent out to 12
participants with
previous knowledge
and experience with
CONTENTdm
9 (or 75%) of the 12
completed the survey
Asked 11 questions
8. Back-End User Survey
The first 5 questions clarified their use of CONTENTdm and
asked demographic questions
The next 9 closed-ended questions were specific to the
CONTENTdm platform with a four-point scale (Strongly Agree,
Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree)
The final question was open-ended and allowed for any
additional comments or feedback
9. Back-End User Perceptions
Strengths:
Ability to incorporate a variety of materials into a collection
Simplicity of creating collections
Customization features
Extensive metadata usage and statistical analysis
Weaknesses:
Lack of customer/technical support
Cost
Back-end interface is not very intuitive to use
10. Front-End User Survey
The first 5 questions clarified their use of CONTENTdm and
asked demographic questions
The next 6 closed-ended questions were specific to the
CONTENTdm platform with a four-point scale (Strongly Agree,
Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree)
The final question was open-ended and allowed for any
additional comments or feedback
11. Front-End User Perceptions
Strengths:
Extensive and meaningful metadata
Overall attractive appearance
Good Image Quality
Rather intuitive system interface
Weaknesses:
Inability to scroll through multiple items within a collection
Navigation issues
12. Literature Review
Strengths
Widespread use among
institutions for their digital
collection management needs
Metadata structure
Weaknesses
Confusing system interface
design
Inconsistent and inaccurate
search results
13. Conclusion
Although OCLC claims that CONTENTdm is easy to
use and the processes are streamlined, our survey
results and a review of the existing literature do not
completely confirm these claims. As for LDL, it
seems to work for some, but not all, of its users.
