2. INTRODUCTION
Leopards are big cats known for their golden, spotted bodies and graceful, yet ferocious
hunting techniques, they are protected and conserved largely in wildlife sanctuaries.
Though the leopards try to stay clear of humans, conflict becomes inevitable when a
leopard enters far into human territory in search of food or when humans
encroach upon forests and reduce the space available as shelter for leopards and
because of their high extinction rate, the recent rise in human-leopard conflicts is
worrying.
In the present problem, the wildlife sanctuary is situated between two villagers,
resulting in increased human-leopard conflict which is posing as a threat to both the
species.
3. CAUSES OF HUMAN-LEOPARD CONFLICT
Loss of wildlife habitat
Increase in human interference/activity
Search for food due to shrinking prey base
forced relocation and separation
4. SUGGESTIVE MEASURES TO PREVENT THE
LEOPARD FROM BEING INJURED OR HARMED BY
THE VILLAGERS:
Education and awareness programs
Conduction of mock drills and provision of appropriate apparatus for search
and rescue operations for quick response to the situation
Monitoring and tracking leopards
Relocation of villages along with appropriate compensation
5. CONCLUSION
Leopards are extremely secretive animals and difficult to research thus
what we know about them is very little other than the fact that they are
listed in the vulnerable category on the IUCN Red List and wildlife
sanctuaries are the only spaces where they are protected. We need
better public education about leopard behavior and the importance of
acknowledging the presence of wildlife when working to help their survival
and minimize conflict situations.
