32. Vala Ola (Iceland, 1962) Lost tribes – maquette
Her jewelry is made of shells and pearls. The long tubular shaped
Wampum shells were used as currency among the tribes. They were
made of the inner spiral, or columella of the channeled whelk
shell (white, or from quahog when purple). The oval shaped beads
are olivia shells. Pearls from oysters were collected and strung on a
string of sinew or leather. The pendant is a shell gorget carved out
of the whorl of a conch shell. The cross symbolizes the four winds,
it sits within a circle symbolizing the sun/moon.
36. Sitting between the restaurant and the Ulele Spring,
the nearly seven-feet tall, 500-pound bronze by Cave
Creek, Arizona artist Vala Ola celebrates the
independent spirit of Ulele, the young daughter of
local Tocobaga chief Hirrihigua. The statue is
surrounded by water and a “ring of fire.” Special
lighting accents the statue at night.
