A girl in the river
1. Sharmeen Obaid Chinnoy's A girl in the
river.
Beginning with the focal point of a romantic tale , the anecdote around a nineteen-year-old
young lady, Saba, who phenomenally survived honour killing submitted by her own particular
father and uncle is shown in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Oscar-winning narrative film, A Girl in
the River. In Pakistan, in excess of 1000 women are accounted for as casualties of honour killing
every year, and, as indicated by the International Honor-Based Violence Awareness Group.
A Girl In the River is told from the point of view of an eighteen-year-old young lady named Saba
Qaiser, who survived a honour killing endeavor by her own dad and uncle. Saba was engages to
a young fellow with whom she needed to wed, and had acknowledgment from the greater part
of her family, apart for her uncle and dad. One day, Saba kept run off to a neighborhood court
and got hitched to her sweetheart. While at her in-law's home, her dad and uncle came and
stated, โLet us take her back to our home, and then you come take her honorably so neighbors
and society donโt look upon us as a family that has been shamed. โThey at that point acquired
her to the forested areas in a car and beat her, shot her in the face and the hand, place her in a
sack, and tossed her in a stream. Indeed, even after such a merciless assault, despite everything
she figured out how to haul herself out of the stream and found a neighborhood fuel station,
where she was then taken to a healing center. Saba was resolved to make cases of her dad and
uncle, saying, โI want them to be shot in public so that no other father [or] man does this to a
woman and his family.โ Although her dad and uncle were placed in prison, an escape clause in
Pakistani law permitted the total arrival of the culprits on the off chance that they got absolve
from the casualty's family. For Saba's situation, the area Elders said they would shun her in-laws
if Saba did not excuse her assailants. She in the end chose to go to court and excuse them,
however in the film she said to Obaid-Chinoy, โI forgive them because of family pressure,
because of societal pressure. But in my heart, they will always be unforgiven.โ
The concept of honour in Pakistan is driven by patriarchy and the very male-driven sense of
honour which is tied to societyโs perception of the women of the family.
The absence of attainability roots more from the religious gatherings in Pakistan. They have
condemned the current bill by calling it hostile to Islamic, blaming the law for being one that
"makes a man unreliable" and endeavors to change the nation. The profoundly engraved belief
systems in Pakistani society additionally resist the change. In A Girl In the River, Saba's dad told
Obaid-Chinoy that he increased more respect in regard to the community for his endeavor to
slaughter his own particular little girl. He stated, โYes, I killed her. Sheโs my daughter and I
wanted to kill her. I provided for her. How dare she defy me? How dare she go out without my
permission? And I am ready to spend my entire life in jail because this is something I did for my
2. honor, the honor of my family. She has shamed us.โ Obaid-Chinoy saw that he didn't consider
her to be another individual; he considered her to be an animal that he claimed and she
couldn't settle on choices all alone. โI tried to kill my own daughter with my own hands, but
she survived. I still have no regret because she deserves that punishment,โ Maqsood said, soon
after his release from jail. โI couldnโt even make eye-contact with the people in my
neighborhood after she eloped. But now, I feel relaxed, I feel proud.โ The mentality of Qaiser's
father speaks to numerous other men who still trust they are qualified for the life decisions of
the women in their family, and feel they are completely advocated to kill a lady on the off
chance that she conflicts with their desires.
Sabaโs father doesnโt think he is wrong when countered with that if he thought murdering his
daughter was right he said that what she did wasnโt right either. The Pakistani community is
built in such a way because of less to none education, the essence of Islam is not truly known
by the people. They consider that women should only be home to not study or work but that is
the untruth, consider the wives of the prophet(PBUH), Hazrat Khadija (R.A) who had her own
trade or Hazrat Aisha (R.A) who fought in a war. Because of less education the people of
Pakistan do not truly understand their religion thus distort it in their own version for their own
benefit. As a culture it has become that honour is directly linked to the women of the society, it
doesnโt matter what a son does but what a daughter does is directly linked with the honour of
the Father. In no way Sabaโs father think that she has her own rights or descions but should go
by his whim and wish.
The main solution to the โhonour killingโ problem is education. If the men and women of
Pakistan are educated especially of the lower class honour killing would decrease. The women
would know of their rights and if their father or husbands abuse them it is not acceptable but
wrong. How the men would know that โHonour killingโ is not right and unacceptable in Islam
and human rights. How honour killing is not the only option but talking to your daughters and
having a more passive way to solve these problems is a better approach.
More so the government should take an active part in resolving these social issues , like The
Punjab Protection of Women Against Violence Bill consistently passed on February 24, which
re-imagined violence as any offense perpetrated against a lady, including โdomestic, sexual,
psychological, economic abuse, and cybercrime.โ In Punjab, two siblings were condemned to
death and fined for the honour killing of their sister and her better half, who got hitched out of
their own will six years prior. This episode of holding responsibility is an essential advance in
changing a culture that has overlooked respect killings for so long.
