The evidence of the empty tomb convinced John but not the other disciples. For most only a personal encounter with the risen Lord results in an unshakable faith and commitment.

7. Peter and John go and look.
John 20:3-9
The grave cloths are the third sign that
something strange had happened.
John sees the grave clothes lying
exactly where the body had lain.
Why would “they” remove the body
and leave the cloths?

8. The meaning of the grave cloths.
John 20:6-7
One large piece
of linen wrapped
over the whole
body.
One thin strip
wound round
the large cloth.
One folded cloth
around the
head.

9. The meaning of the grave cloths.
John 20:8
The head cloth was lying still folded
where the head had been.
John realised this meant that the body
had not been unwrapped before it
disappeared.
John “saw and believed.”

10. Resurrection faith
John 20:9
“Jesus said, “I am the
Resurrection and the Life. He
who believes in Me, though
he may die, he shall
live.” (John 11:25)
Simon Peter could not make
the leap of faith.

14. Mary waited outside the tomb,
weeping. John 20:10-17
As she waits a man asks her, “Woman
why are you weeping? Whom do you
seek?”
Mary not recognising Him offered to
organise (and pay) for men to come and
re-bury the body.
Instead of a dead body and an empty
tomb Mary came face to face with her
living, risen Lord.

15. Belief and conviction
For most it is not the empty
tomb that brings belief but the
personal encounter with the
living Lord.
For some like John the evidence
is enough, but for most belief
and joy comes when Jesus
touches the heart.
He has conquered death.
He knows us by name!

16. Only first hand experience brings
conviction. John 20:18 - 20
Nothing Mary or John could
say could convince the other
disciples. They stayed full of
doubt and uncertainty.

17. Only first hand experience brings
conviction. John 20:18 - 20
Nothing Mary or John could
say could convince the other
disciples. They stayed full of
doubt and uncertainty.
Jesus appears in their midst;
they experience the risen Lord
and know beyond all doubt
He has risen.

18. The Peace of the Holy Spirit
John 20:21 - 22
Jesus gives them the peace
and joy - of the Holy Spirit.
After the sorrow and pain of
the past they need His healing
and joy.
“Ask and it will be given to
you . . . .”
