3. “we live in an age of migration” - Stephen Castles and
Mark Miller
A fundamental characteristic of people is their
movement from place to place.
This movement has contributed to build up diverse
societies around the world.
Right to move was recognized globally with adoption
of universal declaration of human rights.
Migration takes place due to various reasons.
4. Migration can be categorized as internal and external.
External migration can be divided as Emigration and
immigration
Immigration can be regular or irregular (legal or
illegal), voluntary or involuntary
According to IOM, 2004 irregular migration is:
“Movement that takes place outside the regulatory
norms of the sending, and receiving countries.”
My present study is based on illegal immigration.
5. Illegal migration is used in public and policy discourses,
Past few years most of Sri Lankan illegal migrants arrived
to Australia.
Australia faces a range of immigration challenges due to
illegal immigrants from Sri Lanka
Irregular migration can be regarded as one of the patterns of
migration that commonly happen in Sri Lanka.
This has become a serious issue bath of countries.
6. Purpose of LR here is to identify a research gap, formulate a
theoretical framework and understanding the concepts related to my
theme.
Many institutes engaged in research define and illustrate the meaning
of migration.
Today the country has emerged as a unique case of large scale
emigration. (Silva,2013;28).
There has been a rapid increased in human mobility across
international borders between 1970 and 2007 of international migrants
increased from 82 million to 200 million that comprising 3% world
population.(betts,2011;1).
7. It is estimated that approximately 33.1 million of immigrants
(documented and undocumented)Live in America(Camarota,2002;
35).
Under the British rule, when Sri Lankan Tamil migrated to Malaysia
in small number, primarily to work in British-owned rubber
plantation. (Migration profile Sri Lanka; 2013, 31).
By the end of 2005 approximately 800,837 female workers migrated.
(International Labor Organization 2005).
In 2009, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Jordan, along
absorbed over 86% labor migrants in Sri Lanka.
Eastern Asia countries such as South Korea, Singapore are emerging
destination for Sri Lankan emigrants. (Migration profile Sri Lanka;
2013,31).
8. According to the United Nations (2013) 1.25 million Sri Lanka-born
persons live in outside the country.
International migration divides into a range of different categories,
law skilled labor migration, high skilled migration, irregular
migration, international travels, life style migration, environmental
migration, human trafficking and smuggling, asylum seekers, refugee
protection, internally displaced people, diaspora, remittance.( World
migration report, 2000; 02).
The numbers have continued to rise in 2013, with over 1,730 Sri
Lankans arriving in Australia to July (Howie, 2013, 01).
“Australia has come to be a much desired destination for
immigrations all over the world” (international organization for
migration,2012;10).
9. Illegal immigration is a common problem to Australia. The
available scholarship in this understudied area has mainly
focused on the experience of migration. This scholarship
also suggests that a considerable number of migrants are
refugees, asylum seekers, stateless people, and displaced
people. No if not less studies have been carried out on why
illegal immigration is taken place at the global level. with
the recent changes in demographics in Sri Lanka,
immigrants into Australia is gradually increasing. Hence it
is timely important to explore the phenomenon of Sri
Lankan illegal immigration to Australia in order to know the
different factors accountable for such happening
10. Why do people migrate to Australia through illegal
means?
11. To investigate how illegal immigration took place in the Sri
Lankan context during 2005 and 2015.
To examine reasons for Sri Lankan illegal immigration to
Australia.
To analyze the impact of illegal immigration on the Social
and the political economy.
To propose feasible solutions to mitigate the negative
impacts of illegal immigration .
12. How do the Sri Lankan immigrants perceive of
Australia as a destination?
What are the features and patterns of illegal
migration of Sri Lanka?
How does the illegal migration affect on socio-
economic and political system?
Why do people attempt to migrate to Australia
through unauthorized means?
Research Questions
13. Though illegal migration creates problems for
both countries of origin and destination, the Sri

14. Importance of this study can be taken into account
from several fronts
Academic Importance- adding new knowledge to
the existing knowledge.
Theoretical Importance - Usage of the pre developed
theories within an empirical field.
Applied or Policy Importance-helps to the
administrators to well aware on policy making.
Social importance-due to base on society
15. Three types of methodologies applied in social research are
qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods.
In this study, the primary and secondary sources will be
used to collect data.
Under the primary sources, interviews and field notes and
also other related source will be used
For secondary sources related documents, journals, relevant
books, reports and any other articles are chosen
16. Data analysis will based on multiple case studies.
As the present study is based on mix-method, bath
qualitative and quantitative method is used.
Under quantitative method, Microsoft excel or spss
are applied to analyze data while the descriptive
method for as qualitative analysis.
17. There exists a gap in the illegal immigration literature

illegal immigrants experience
Contemporary need of acquire new knowledge of this

Need reliable and tangible information to social
scientists, policy makers, educators, international
researchers, to make efforts in tackling illegal migration
issues

where illegal migration mostly happen during 2005-
2015

illegal migration challenge.
Illegal migration of Sri Lanka is a vast area to study.
Due to some factors, the current research narrowed
down to a limited area.
This study limits illegal migration issue from Sri Lanka
to Australia.
Some numerical data and the statistics which are
already included in the research paper with a star
indication are still not finalized.

migration to Australia from Sri Lanka.

Lanka, illustrating the history of Sri Lankan migration.
The fourth chapter will present and highlight the results of the case
by case analysis, in addition to each case being described in great
detail.
The last chapter will discuss the results of the study. The chapter
also addresses how this thesis has contributed to knowledge and
offers some suggestions for future research. The chapter concludes
by briefly addressing whether there is a possible solution to illegal
immigration.
