My teaching and research focus on sustainable urban design, social factors in design and community participation and engagement. Interested in understanding the link between place identity and urban design, with particular emphasis on suburban planned communities. A more recent research interest has been in developing tools to map qualities that affect residents' liveability perceptions.
I have a deep interest in community design and user involvement in the design process. I believe in a democratic design that generates from bottom up rather than top down processes, and in academic research that can make a difference in people's lives.
